Obituary of Zenon Boris Buchko
Zenon Boris Buchko, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025, at the age of 91. His last days were spent comfortably with his family.
Zenon was born in Prince Albert on October 24, 1933, and spent his early years in Honeymoon and Meath Park where his parents farmed and operated the local store. Upon completing high school he worked with the CPR railway as a station attendant for three years. He then funded his university education by working as a cook at a mining camp in the Northwest Territories. One summer he returned home early to complete exams, narrowly avoiding a tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of many colleagues - an event for which he remained eternally grateful.
Inspired by his brother Orest, Zenon attended the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with a degree in pharmacy in 1962. In 1966 he accepted a position as a pharmacist at St. Therese Hospital in Tisdale where he spent the majority of his professional career. Together with his wife Betty he raised their three children there. Zenon retired early in 1989, dedicating his retirement to his art, music, and various hobbies.
Growing up with music from family gatherings Zenon become an exceptional guitar player who brought joy to many. Whether performing for friends and family or for his own enjoyment his music reflected his soulful spirit. He maintained many friendships throughout the province and continued playing guitar until December 2024, often performing "for the seniors" at the Heritage on Mondays. Zenon played in many bands including The Country Gentlemen and Just Your Basic Band and was inducted into the Prince Albert Artist Hall of Fame in 2016 as a member of the Cotton Pickers. His love for music was evident wherever he went. He led a life rich in creativity, passion, and affection for those closest to him.
Zenon was not only a talented musician but also an accomplished artist. He painted in his youth and resumed after retiring leaving behind vibrant works primarily focused on nature and wildlife. He would travel throughout the province to art and craft shows to promote his work. Some of his art is displayed at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada in Saskatoon. Zenon also enjoyed fishing and golfing, regularly visiting the Emma Lake Golf Course into his 90s. He loved to travel and in his later years was fortunate enough to travel to parts of the Caribbean and overseas to China with his daughters and grandchildren.
Zenon is survived by his children, Laura (Toby), Janet (Ross), and Gerald (Shannon); his six grandchildren, Ashley (Thomas), Morgan (Lindsey), Zachary (Alea), Emma, Oliver, and Jasper; and two great-grandchildren, Summer and Kitson. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Betty May Buchko (nee Mardell), his parents, Steven and Josephine Buchko, his brothers, Orest and Emil Buchko, and his great-grandson, Henry Jack.
