Herb was born March 2nd, 1924, at Chwdirn, Germany and on April 30, 1925, the family of three boarded the ship, ANDANIA which landed in Halifax on May 16th. They then came by train to Leask, Sk where Rudolf's brother Emil was homesteading. They subsequently moved to several different areas of the province, chasing work. In 1927, they homesteaded in the Birch Lake district, north of Mildred. During this time, Erna, Arthur and Gertrude were born. Herb attended the newly built East Creek School from age 11-14 when his dad became ill and passed away. Suddenly, Herb found himself responsible to help feed the family of five. They expanded the farm as they could afford and Herb farmed with his mother until he married Lucy Lange in 1949. Three boys came along in the next four years. When East Creek school was closed in 1956, Herb found new opportunities at Rabbit Lake, moving the family in 1957 to the George Cavey farmstead a mile north of the village. During that time, their son, Rienhold became ill and passed away in February of 1961. The farm expanded significantly in 1959 with the rental of the George Brown farm, which continued until 1964. Herb then bought a half section on the Mullingar grid and cleared and broke many acres. Through really hard work and perseverance the farm was ultimately successful. His wife Lucy endured 12 years of fighting cancer and was taken suddenly in 1994. Herb continued to farm the home half section and in 1996 found a new life-mate in Helen Marsden. In 2007, Herb & Helen moved to the Rose Gill Lodge at which time his farming career was officially over. Herb spent his last year at care facilities in Leoville and Dalmeny prior to his passing. Donations in Herb's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or one of the Donor's Choice. Email condolences will be forwarded to the family. Delores Beaulac entrusted with arrangements.
