Obituary of Gordon Olaf Olson
Gordon Olaf Olson, formerly of Stump Lake, passed away peacefully October 18, 2013 with family by his side. Gordon passed at Whispering Pine Place in Canwood at the age of 98, after a brief illness. Gordon was born December 14, 1914 in Bjorkberg, Sweden. Gordon was the seventh, and youngest, child of Johan Ulrik and Karolina Fredrika Olsson. Gordon immigrated to Canada in 1927 at the age of 13 with his family. Their ship landed at the port in Halifax and they took the train to Canwood, where Gordon helped his father homestead in the Stump Lake area. Over the years, Gordon worked in lumber camps, had his own saw mill, farmed the land he cleared with his father, had cattle, hogs, chickens and always a huge garden. Together with his wife Bertha, they raised five children - Roland, Ken, Sigurd, Melvin and Donna. In 1996, Gordon lost the love of his life, wife Bertha, and in Fall of 2001 moved into Canwood. Due to deteriorating health, he moved to Big River Care Lodge, and later into Canwood’s Whispering Pine Place, where he remained until his death on October 18th. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Roland (Anita), Ken, Sigurd (Lila), Melvin (Ann) and Donna (Ernest); grandchildren Les (Kirsti), Gary (Jenn), Tiffany (Jay), Gordie (Lindsey), Kevin (Renae), James (Carlie), Rhonda (Shandon), Kenneth and great grandchildren, Tyler, Josh, Jacob; Hanna, Noah, Meredith; Gavin, Sam; Caylah, Tora, Rakel; and Dallas; daughter in law, Marcy; son-at-heart, Duane (JoAnn), daughters Betty, Carol, Dorothy & families; as well as by nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives. Gordon was predeceased by his wife Bertha (Hiebert) in 1996, sisters Ethel (Pete) Peterson, Agda (Gote) Lindholm, Rakel, Gudrun, and brothers Bror (Clara), and Gunnar; good friend Walter Gray, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nephews and nieces, good friends, neighbours, hunting and fishing companions. Many thanks to everyone that have been part of Gordon’s life and a special thank you to the tremendous staff at Whispering Pine Place Care Home for his exceptional care. Funeral Service for Gordon will be on Wednesday October 23, 2013 at 2:00pm in the Canwood Elks Community Hall. Interment will follow at the Stump Lake Hillside Cemetery.
