Obituary of Elizabeth "Betty" Sterling

Betty Sterling Mom and dad were married in 1947 and lived on the farm until 1951. There was no running water or electricity, and the roads were not plowed and there were no school buses. So, mom and dad decided it was time to move off the farm and into Shellbrook. At a very young age mom’s father taught her to step dance. She also took Highland Dance lessons from Mrs. Miller Sr. and Thea Agnew. The last time mom danced formally was for the first Scottish War Bride who came to Shellbrook. The lady was Ethel Land. During the early years, Mom taught Sunday as did many other mothers. When Sheldon and Ward were old enough mom took on the role of Scout Leader. In later years you would hear “Hi Akala” from every place she went. Mom joined the Royal Purple in 1954 and participated in many July 1st Sports Days and other formalities. Mom was currently in her 59th year of Purpledom! Mom and dad enjoyed camping for several years. They camped often with the Cooper family until they bought the cabin. Many more wonderful days were spent at the cabin with family and friends for many celebrations. Mom and dad spent many good times watching the grandchildren play ball in all parts of the province. They especially enjoyed travelling to watch them play in Provincial Games. Their grandfather, being a former ball player, thoroughly enjoyed these games. Mom enjoyed her business “Nails by Betty”. She was always busy, and especially enjoyed visiting with her clients. She was in the business about 10 or more years. Our mother was an accomplished seamstress. There wasn’t much she couldn’t make. She seldom used a pattern as we girls would draw a sketch and she would make it. Mom joined the Doubleday Day Book Club, and soon had a budding library. She often read late into the evening. “Remembering you is easy, we do it every day, missing you is the hard part that never goes away..” Betty is lovingly survived by her children, Dwana Elizabeth (Tony) Atkins, Roberta Edith Sterling, Joanne Alaine (Brian) Jewitt, Robert Sheldon (June) Sterling, Ward Thomas (Michelle) Sterling: Her Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren Jill (Ron); Erin (Lamont) and children, Sidney, Bronson & Parker; Desjalee (Dan) and children, Rychen, Carys and Flynn; Jason (Leanne) and daughter Mikayla; David (Miranda) and children, Wyatt, Veum, Vashti, Bryson & Emmit; Brody (Dianne) and children, Domenic, Dauntèa, Ashton & Mersaides; Shannon (Henry) and children, Robyn, Andrew & Chantel; Rachael; Angela; Tera (Aron) and children, Skylar & Hayden; Andrea (Todd) and children, Kaiden, Keiryn & Keehlin; Shaylene.
