Obituary of Ethel Ann Holman
Mrs. Ethel Ann Holman
(Nee: Czank)
1934-2014
On May 28, 2014 the family of Mrs. Ethel Ann Holman, late of Shellbrook, said goodbye to a dear sweet wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and a dear friend. Ethel Ann Holman was born on September 17, 1934, the youngest of six children on a homestead NE of Mistatim, SK, to Steve and Theresa Czank. At the age of 9 months the family moved to Welland, Ontario. This is where Ethel spent her youthful years and received all her schooling. She worked around Welland, Ontario for about a year then decided to move out west following her brothers and sister to Bannock, SK.
In Bannock she became a supervisor teacher for grades 1-8 in a one room log school. She did this over the next couple of years living in a small teacherage beside the school. This is where she met the love of her life – Donald Holman at a dance in Bannock. They courted for a couple of years and were married on August 21, 1954. They raised two children (Terry & Kevin) on a farm just east of Mistatim, SK. Ethel loved the horses and enjoyed horseback riding, gardening and took great pride in her housekeeping skills. Sundays were always set aside as a day of rest and attending Mass was an important part of Ethel’s life. She was involved in the CWL for years at the Mistatim Parish. Ethel was always a career woman at heart and once her children were older she worked at the Weather Station in Nipawin. In 1978 she worked for the Department of Agriculture in Hudson Bay, she later transferred to the office in Tisdale, where she worked for over 20 years. After retirement her and Don spent more time on bus tours, visiting family more often, and camping and fishing in Big River.
Ethel was a member of the gun club and had acquired many trophies over the years. Ethel also became a self-trained artist and her paintings developed into beautiful pieces of art.
Ethel and Don moved off the farm in 2007 where they lived in Prince Albert for the next 3 years. In 2010 they bought a house in Shellbrook where she resided until her passing. They both enjoyed making new friends in Shellbrook, as well as bowling in Canwood.
Ethel was the foundation of her family; she was a determined, strong-minded lady and very strong in her faith. Ethel will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
