Obituary of Robert "Bob" John Henderson

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Henderson, late of Candle Lake, SK. Bob passed away peacefully at the Victoria Union Hospital in Prince Albert on the morning of June 10, 2015 after a brief battle with brain cancer at the age of 73. Bob was born March 10th, 1942 in Russell, MB, the chosen son of William & Gertrude Henderson. He grew up in Lyleton, MB, a very close knit community, where his Dad & Mom owned and operated a Red & White store for 25 years. It was here where Bob got his training in customer relations and business. Upon graduating from Pierson Collegiate at 19, he joined the Hudson's Bay Co., with his first posting at Churchill, MB. Bob was a very dedicated Bay employee and worked with the company for 14 years, spanning three Provinces and nine different stores with his last posting being in Prince Albert as General Manager. It was during his early years with the Bay, the fall of 1961, that Bob met the love of his life, Karen Fonos, while stationed in La Ronge. They got married on September 15, 1962. During a break from the Bay Bob owned and operated his own Tomboy supermarket for five years in Souris, MB. In 1982 he was hired with the City of Prince Albert as an Economic Development Officer of Tourism and Industry, a position he held for nine years. In 1987 Bob’s dream was realized - owning a Tourist camp at Green Lake with partner's Harvey Clark & Arnie McKay. The one downfall that came with owning the camp was just no time for fishing. Bob truly loved meeting all of the clients and could hand out a lot of fabricated tales when it came to how good the fish were biting. Many lasting friendships were made and time was always found for "Happy Hour". In 1999 Green Lake Lodge was sold and we retired to Candle Lake. Even though we lived at a Lake, we still took a month every summer to go to our cottage in Northern Manitoba, as the peacefulness and the fishing were something out of this world. Bob was involved in community organizations, such as Kinsmen & Chamber of Commerce in the communities where he lived, enjoyed curling, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and camping with his family. Bob & Karen enjoyed many winters in the sunny south, cruised to Alaska, Hawaii, and to many Caribbean Islands. Our family and friends accompanied us on many of these trips and added to our enjoyment. Bob truly enjoyed his winters in Florida and he did it “his way” staying in the sun until he was forced to make his final trip back to Saskatchewan at the end of March due to illness. Bob is survived by his loving wife Karen (nee Fonos) of 52 years, his children Terry (Pollyann Misiwich) of Prince Albert, Don (Connie Balan) of Prince Albert, his sister Joy (Glen Green) of Brandon, Manitoba. Bob was predeceased by his parents William & Gertrude Henderson. A Celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Candle Lake Golf Resort Convention Centre at 2:00pm on Monday June 22, 2015. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Victoria Hospital. As well, a special thank you to all of Bob & Karen’s family and friends for the countless visits, phone calls and “happy hours” during these last eight weeks. Family and friends wishing to send online condolences are welcome to visit www.beaulacfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Beau “Lac” Funeral Home, Prince Albert- Marianne Turcotte, Funeral Director, 306-763-3322.
