Obituary of "Bud" Harold Weegar

"Bud" Harold Weegar June 24, 1935-June 14, 2015 It is with sadness that Bud’s family announces his sudden passing at his home in Shell Lake on June 14, 2015 just ten days shy of his 80th birthday. Bud will be missed by his loving wife Phyllis Melton, children Les (Anna) and Lisa (Declan), step-children Janet (Dave), Sandra (Greg), Carla (Dennis), and Guy (Christine), grandchildren Tanner, Robben, Max, Sean, Deirdre (Matt), Sinead, and Oliver, as well as ten step-grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Bud is also survived by his sister Vickie, numerous family and friends. Bud was born north of Holbein and attended a small country school and then Prince Albert Composite High School before starting his career in forestry and agriculture. Bud worked as a Saskatchewan Smoke Jumper out of Prince Albert and La Ronge in 1953, jumping by parachute from a bush plane to battle forest fires. He followed this up with a 35-year career in the Research Branch of Agriculture Canada. He married, and raised two children in Saskatoon. Bud enjoyed curling, golfing, fishing, hunting, and the outdoors. When Bud retired he lived at Emma Lake for several years before settling in Shell Lake where he met his wife Phyllis. Bud loved to fish and spent many hours on the lake in his fishing boat. Late in his life Bud’s eyesight failed—a challenge he met in his usual no-nonsense way. He was definitely one of the tough guys. Even when he became legally blind he remained active and robust in many activities and socially. Those who knew Bud will know he didn’t hesitate to let people know exactly what was what, he enjoyed some good-natured banter, and he was great at teasing the people he knew could take it. For many people, their world grows smaller as they get older, but for Bud it was the opposite. He embraced his life with Phyllis and was fortunate to have such a full and rich history. He will be sadly but fondly missed. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, June 20th at 2:00pm at the Lion’s Hall in Shell Lake, SK. Memorial Donations can be directed to CNIB or the Canadian Lung Association.
