Obituary of Eldon Toralph Amundson
Eldon Toralph Amundson
Eldon Toralph Amundson was born in Kinistino Saskatchewan to Joseph and Freda Amundson on March 8, 1952. He was the second child of their family of five, having two sisters and two brothers. Eldon grew up on a farm and was blessed to grow up with not only his own family, but also 5 cousins in the same yard. He attended school in Weldon through grade nine and then went to Birch Hills where he completed his high school. His job in the office at Mayes Autobody in North Battleford led him to pursue an education at the University of Saskatchewan in Commerce. Convocating in 1977, Eldon began articling at Touche Ross in Saskatoon. While working on audits for the Star Phoenix newspaper, he was offered a job there and in 1979 he commenced a thirty one year career, first as an accountant culminating as their comptroller. On October 20, 1979 he married the love of his life and best friend, Judy Gear. Their 35 years of marriage were filled with happiness at their welcoming home in Saskatoon. In January of 1990, they were blessed to receive their first child Kyle. In December of 1991, they were given a Christmas present, Holly, to complete their family. Two particular activities in Eldon’s life come to mind; one was his hobby of growing lilies. He spent many hours in his yard dedicating time and effort to fill a beautiful garden with them. A passion Eldon shared with his kids was hockey; both as a player and a coach. The opportunity to coach both his son and daughter brought him great joy as they played the game that taught them athletic skill and learned values applicable to life.
In late 2010, Eldon retired and began a new adventure. He helped family and friends on their farms, he and Judy enjoyed travelling, a major highlight being a trip to Norway in 2012 meeting over 120 relatives from the Vaadeland and Amundson sides of his family. They loved being snowbirds in Arizona where they had made many friends. Eldon was also very active in softball, pickle ball, and golf. In 2013 they moved to Shellbrook where they designed and built their new home. In May 2015, Eldon was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Following complications of the treatment he passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 20, 2015. Eldon’s life will always be defined by his love for his family and his strong faith in God.
Eldon is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judy Amundson; his son, Kyle Amundson; his daughter Holly Amundson; his father Joseph Amundson; his sisters Carol (Phil) Sampson; Lynette (Ron) Hannigan; his brothers Phil (Victoria) Amundson; Wayne (Mary Ruth) Amundson; and numerous nieces, nephews great nieces and nephews and other relatives.
