Obituary of Sonja Majken DeRoo

Sonja's family announces her passing with heavy hearts. She passed away in Shellbrook on August 8th, 2015 at the age of 87. Sonja was born in Kristianstad, Sweden on Jan 20, 1928. Sonja, her older brother Carl and her parents lived in Everad in the south. Otto and Elsa heard how good it was to live in Canada so they moved their family, leaving their 10 siblings behind. Otto moved in May 1928, landing in Halifax and travelling by train to Moose Jaw where he got a job working for the city. Elsa and the children followed in Feb 1929. Otto and Elsa then moved to the Witchekan District in 1932. Sonja’s younger brother, Roy was born in Nov of 1936. Carl joined the army before he was 18, while he was oversees he was hit by a sniper on April 27 and passed away on the 29th. He is buried in the Holter Cemetery in Holland. The family moved around a few more places and the last school Sonja attended was the East Creek School. This is where she met Willie Shock at a dance. Willie, his brother Alex and few buddies were playing some of the dances. Willie and Sonja were married on Oct 29, 1945. They were blessed with daughters; Darlene and Carol. In 1955 Willie, Sonja and their family moved to McBride, B.C were Willie worked for the Harstad Lumber Company until 1960 when they moved to the Amien District, until 1963 when they moved into Shell Lake. Sonja took over the telephone Office until it went automatic, and Willie worked with the Dept of Highways until his retirement. In 1970 Darlene and Carol had a double wedding; Darlene marrying Harold Kjerstad and Carol marrying Brian Johnson. Willie passed away in 1988 and Sonja remarried Fred DeRoo of Unity in 1992. Sonia felt truly blessed to have her family and friends share in her life. Sonja is lovingly remembered by: Her husband, Fred DeRoo of Shell Lake, SK, Her daughters: Darlene Della Kjerstad (Darryl Rodocker) of Shell Lake, SK and Carol Ann (Brian) Johnson of Shell Lake, SK. Her grandchildren: Jeffery (Melissa) Johnson of Saskatoon, SK and their children: Cole and Trey, Trevor (Kim) Johnson of Shell Lake, SK and their children: Tristan, Kyra and Dylan and Tracy Johnson (Vince Uebell) of Saskatoon, SK. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She is predeceased by: Her first husband, William Schock (1988), Her parents, Otto and Elsa Olson and Her brothers, Carl and Roy Olson A Memorial Service was held in her honor on Saturday the 29th day of August, 2015 from the Lion's Hall in Shell Lake, SK.
