Obituary of Ken Granville Thompson

Kenneth "Ken Thompson Kenneth Granville Thompson was born to Carl and Betsy Thompson in Prince Albert on February 3, 1932. They moved to the farm at Ordale when he was still a baby. He attended school at Bygland and then on to Shellbrook for Grade 10 . He finished Grade 10 the same day he started. What a smart boy! From there it was on to bigger and better things - farming. Ken really enjoyed his cattle. He along with his dad and Uncle Eddie raised, showed and sold Registered Polled Hereford cattle. Ken always enjoyed hunting down a deal on equipment whether he needed it or not. Through farming he became involved in the Sask Wheat Pool committee, Ordale District. He was involved in the Ordale Community in numerous capacities including serving on the Ordale Curling Club, Concordia Lutheran Church, the Ordale Snowplow Club, Shellbrook Co-op, and the Shellbrook Fish and Game League committees. Besides farming, Ken worked at other jobs such as building roads in the RM of Canwood, did some gravel crushing for a winter, and helped with house moving with his dad and his Uncle Eddie. He worked for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance for 25 years as a field adjustor. In 1960 he married Lucille Bloom. They were married for 54 1/2 years. Two children were born to them, Tracy in 1963 and Darrin in 1966. Ken was a true Canadian, enjoying camping, fishing and hunting with family and friends. Ken enjoyed travelling but mostly by car. He didn't like to fly and while Hawaii was a place he wanted to go to, he said he wasn't going until they built the bridge. In 2010 Ken moved into Parkland Terrace in Shellbrook, and when the new Parkland Integrated Health Centre opened he moved there and lived here until his passing on August 12, 2015. During his stay at the nursing home, there were a lot of very memorable moments according to the staff. They would feed him Pringles and chocolate in the middle of the night when he was up but supposed to be sleeping. Then the staff liked the nickname “Chipmunk" for Ken, because of an infectious laugh. The nursing home staff has been incredible. The compassion and tender loving care that they gave Kenny was amazing. Ken was very proud of his Norsk heritage and of his family. He loved listening to music and singing. His was a life well lived. Ken is lovingly survived by his wife, Lucille Thompson; his children, Tracy Thompson (Rob Uhlik); and Darrin Thompson; his brothers in-law, Ronald (Mary) Bloom; Glen (Barbara) Bloom; and Dennis Bloom; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, and his special friend “Spud” the “dod”. Ken is predeceased by his parents, Carl & Betsy Thompson (nee: Senum) (1981 & 1986); his parents in-law, Oke & Thelma Bloom (nee: Larson) (1975 & 2001).
