Obituary of Hazel Vera Barkway

Mrs. Hazel Barkway 1933 - 2015 Hazel Vera Barkway (Millard) entered into eternal peace on Monday, August 17 2015 at Pineview Terrace Care Home in Prince Albert. Mom was born in a one room log farm house in Nestledown Saskatchewan, on April 9, 1933 to Howard and Mildred Millard. She moved with her parents and brother Ivan from Nestledown to Shellbrook in December 1943. When mom was 19 she married our dad, Bill Barkway, on September 2, 1953. Mom and dad were married for 47 years, until dads passing in 2001. They lived and worked in Shellbrook their whole lives and were very active in the community. Mom ran the Elks theatre for many years and later got a job as the librarian at the Shellbrook library, a job she held until she retired. Mom and dad loved camping and would spend their summer holidays camping in the tent trailer, usually at Candle Lake. Mom would spend countless hours before the annual camping trip preparing food and baking special treats to take. Camping with the family was filled with days at the beach and nights sitting around playing cards and singing by the fire. Cloudy days were good to because it would be a horseshoe playing day. We often had a horseshoe tournament and mom and dad almost always won. Mom called St Andrew’s Anglican Church her second home. She faithfully participated in all aspects of the church. She taught Sunday school and Confirmation classes, she served on the Vestry; she was an active member of the ACW. All of these things were made possible because she had a personal relationship with the Lord. She eventually became a Lay Reader leading church services when St. Andrew’s was without a minister. If you were talking to mom about something she would often say we’ll have to pray about that, and pray she did. She held us up in prayer probably more often than we will ever know, we were so blessed. Mom was never happier than when we were all at “home”. She loved us, she loved our spouses, she loved our children and our grandchildren. She was interested in our lives and everything we did and was proud of our accomplishments. She would do anything for us. She was always so happy to see you and when you left gave you genuine heartfelt thanks for coming. Mom loved chocolate and sweets, and would never pass them up. Next time you have a Lindor chocolate spare a kind thought for mom. Hazel is lovingly remembered by her children: Shirley (Derald) Shewchuk and family, Bryan (Trina) Shewchuk, Dwayne (Kristin) Shewchuk; Cheryl Ermel (daughter-in-law) and family, Tyrell Barkway, Troy (Stephanie) Barkway, Murray Barkway; Garry (Belinda) Barkway and family, Christopher (Melissa) Barkway, Danielle (James) Prebble; Joan Barkway (Rick Peterson); Janet (Calvin) Harris and family, Janelle Harris, Camille Harris; Valerie (David) Wilson and family, Daniel Wilson (fiancé Anna Klungland), Hanna Wilson, Joel Wilson, Zachary Wilson; Calvin (Tammy) Barkway and family, Andrew Barkway, Ashley (Kaz) Rudolph; Connie Barkway (Jeffery Charlebois) and family, Benjamin Barkway; her 9 great grandchildren; her brother, Ivan and Marj Millard and their family, Lori Millard, and Howie Millard; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
