Obituary of Elizabeth "Liz" Simon

Elizabeth Simon was born March 1, 1926 to Elizabeth and George Volgyi in Kis Lang, Hungary. She was the second oldest child of four. Her sister Mary was oldest and passed away in childhood and then there were the twins Helen and Louis. The family immigrated to the Norbury District when Mom was 4 where her Dad cleared land and built a house. Later her Dad bought land near Larson Lake and had a farm there. For several years the family traveled to Lethbridge every spring to work in the sugar beet fields. Liz started working at a young age for neighbours, babysitting, cleaning house, mudding houses, cooking and doing chores. She later worked as a waitress in town. Joseph Simon was the love of her life and they married in 1948. They bought Sunday's farm and farmed there until Joe passed away in 1980. Liz had so many talents. One was her wonderful cooking and baking. When it was coffee time there was no end to the homemade bread, butter, jam, jelly, her Hungarian rolls, cakes and doughnuts. Neighbours enjoyed many cups of coffee and baking. Liz did beautiful embroidery and was able to whip up clothing and Halloween costumes without patterns. If you could describe it, she could make it! She always enjoyed photography and we now have infinite amounts of albums, boxes of slides and pictures. She was always capturing memories and loved to go back and look at them. Her green thumb was evident by her huge vegetable garden and fruit trees. There was always lots of weeding and canning to be done. The garden was totally her domain so any critter that dared step into it - would be sorry! If it was the cats, they were tossed over the fence and the little Angus calves would be chased with the broom! Liz and Joe would do the chores together - Liz walking out to the pasture morning and night to feed hay bales and then back to feed chickens and milk cows. Liz loved to sing and dance. She and Joe would go to the dances at Resolute or in Spiritwood and they especially enjoyed the waltzes, with Joe so tall and Liz so short that she fit just under his chin. If the Ranger's Waltz came on the radio they would jump up and waltz to it in the kitchen. The cows were often treated to her renditions of "Home on the Range" and "You are my Sunshine" and on the high notes the milk cows big brown eyes would open even wider and they'd flap their ears! After 33 years of marriage, Joe passed away and Liz moved to Spiritwood. She volunteered at the lodge, helped cater with the Catholic ladies and took her turn cleaning the church. Liz was always her family's support, strength and comfort and the family was everything to her. She often told us to be thankful for all our blessings because we were so very fortunate. Liz was one of our many blessings. We were so lucky to have her in our lives. Funeral Service for Elizabeth was held on Tuesday, October 6th, 2015 at 1:00pm from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Spiritwood, SK.
