Obituary of Gordon Stene
STENE – Mr. Gordon
Gordon Stene was born on July 28, 1932 in the Cameo district and passed away on March 10, 2016.
Gordon was the youngest of 10 children born to Ole and Lena Stene. Dad took his schooling at the Cameo school. He helped with the farm work herding cattle, fixing fence, hauling wood and water by horse team. He would tell stories of working with their team of horses and his one saddle horse that was the fastest horse ever.
He worked very hard as a young boy and continued throughout his life.
March 11, 1954 Gordon married Audrey McComas. They began farming in the Rozilee district, as it was a busy time moving a house, building, digging a well, milking cows, raising pigs, and chickens and not getting power till fall of 1958.
Dad was an avid fisherman as mom and dad made many trips to white Swan, Kingsmere, Teds, Sandy and many other lakes with brothers and nephews throughout the years. He loved hunting and did this as long as his health would allow. He hunted elk, moose, and deer. The first years he hunted with his brother’s Andrew, Oscar, Arlo, Glenn and his cousin Ray until Ray moved to B.C. In the later years he hunted with Randy, Rick and Eric Jenson, Adolph Benson and Glenn Ernst. Dad did win a few awards for the largest antlers for deer.
Dad liked restoring old tractors and would spend hours with Randy working on them. he enjoyed making them sound mechanically friendly and to make them look pretty.
Dad coached hockey for a few years for Brad’s peewee team and coached a provincial team also.
Dad was the type of person who couldn’t be without something to do. He loved the idea of going places, but loved it better getting home. Dad really enjoyed going to auction sales.
In 2010 dad had renal failure and started dialysis in Saskatoon, but shortly after pushed his way into the dialysis unit in PA. For the past 5 years the dialysis unit at the Vic Hospital became his second family. They treated him like family that he got to see 3 times a week. They would torment him jokingly and he would give it right back. He was known on the unit as Blue Eyes.
Dad had a brief stay at the Herb Bassett Care Home where he passed away.
He is lovingly survived by his children: Randy (Irene) and children Robert, and his son Linden; Jennifer (Ryan) and children Cameron and Devin; Shannon (Jeff) McKenzie and children Julie and Nola; Laura (Glenn); Ronda (George) and children Hailey (Matt), Jessica and Rory. Brad (Tina) and children Travis and Brianna.
He was predeceased by his wife Audrey in 2009; an infant daughter Karen in 1954; his parents Ole and Lena Stene; his inlaws James and Ella McComas, Earl and Phyllis McComas, Thelma Wilson; his siblings Lloyd (Marion), Oscar (Beluah), Andrew (Annie), Cora (John), Lillie (Walter), Olga (Henry), Gertrude (Godfrey), Emma (Johnny), Gladys (Willie).
