Obituary of Dora Olga Sommerfeld

Dora Sommerfeld, age 90, passed away peacefully on October 3rd, 2017. Dora was born on August 5th, 1927, in the Tiefengrund/Carlton district of Saskatchewan. She was the second child of Adolf and Emilie Hoehn. She attended the Tiefengrund school, near Carlton. In 1941, she moved to the Brightholme district with her parents, and her siblings, Edith and Alfred. On July 7, 1951, Dora married Gustav Sommerfeld at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Brightholme. This is the church where Dora was also confirmed in 1942. The church was always a very important part of Dora's life. She served on the Alter Guild for many years, as well as teaching Sunday school. Dora and her husband farmed on Gustav's family homestead from the time they were married until 1956. That year they moved to Evansburg, Alberta, where Gus was able to find work hauling cement to service oil rigs. In 1961, they returned to the Shellbrook area and continued farming. They farmed until 1984, when they sold the farmland. In 1990 they sold the acreage and moved to Shellbrook. This was Dora's home until 2013, when she moved into long term care at the Parkland Integrated Health Center in Shellbrook. Dora was a hardworking farm woman, who always planted a huge garden and processed hundreds of bags of produce every year to feed her family. She also canned fruit, and made jellies and jams to be enjoyed year-round. Her sauerkraut and dill pickles were family favourites. Dora also helped with chores and field work on the farm. She kept chickens and ducks. The duck feathers and down were made into pillows and duvets, which have become comforting family heirlooms. Dora enjoyed cooking for her family and baking. All of her grandchildren fondly recall her bread, which she baked weekly, and apple pies and cookies that were always on hand. Dora also enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, and spent countless hours on projects for the family. She could sit and visit, or watch her stories on TV, all while crocheting intricate patterns. Dora will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Dora found great joy in visiting with her family and friends. Her face would always light up when family walked through the door of her home. Dora is lovingly remembered by: her children: Jerry (Deb) Sommerfeld and their children: Jonathan Sommerfeld (Emily Enoch), Joshua Sommerfeld (Nicole Dubyk); Iris (Vincent) Milburn and their children: Elan (Blair) Proctor, Luke (Melissa) Milburn and their children, Mikella and Paige, Vanessa Milburn (Terrell Turgeon) and their son, Wyatt; Ernie (Jocelyn) Sommerfeld and their children: Rachel (Blair) Jensen and their children, Riley and Harper, Lindsey (Jory) Blakley; Dennis (Joan) and their children: Antonia Sommerfeld, Mathew (Teanne) Sommerfeld and their children, Mya and Colton, Dane Sommerfeld (Ashleigh) and their daughter, Kyleigh; her brother, Alfred (Lila) Hoehn and their family; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. The funeral service was held on Tuesday October 10th, 2017 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shellbrook, SK. Her niece, Pastor Melissa Brooks, officiated. Interment followed at Brightholme Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Beau Lac Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Brightholme Cemetery Fund.
