Obituary of Ernest "Ernie" George Schwehr
SCHWEHR Mr. Ernie
Ernest George Schwehr was born on January 27, 1930 in the Shellbrook Hospital. Ernie was the son of Annie and Joe Schwehr. He grew up on the farm with his parents and two sisters. He attended Sugar Hill School and then began farming full time. Ernie married Doris (Anderson) on July 20, 1954 in Shellbrook. They made their home at the farm in Sugar Hill where they raised four children. Ernie was always proud to be a farmer and proud to be from the Sugar Hill community where neighbours became lifelong friends. The farm was a busy place where family and friends gathered. Digging potatoes, going berry picking, and trips to the fair with picnic lunches, were regular Schwehr family events. Ernie was a 4-H leader and many young people benefitted from his knowledge as they developed their horsemanship skills through 4-H and at the farm. Throughout his life Ernie was involved in many community events, and belonged to the Canwood Elks. He enjoyed camping trips to many lakes around Saskatchewan with family and friends over the years. Ernie and Doris traveled to Sweden twice and made a trip to London to see the Marchant Grove quilt. They also traveled with Ruth and Pete in their motorhome including a trip across Canada.
Ernie and Doris moved from the farm into Canwood in 2005. However, Ernie was kept busy helping out on the farm and driving truck for other farmers during harvest. Recently Doris and Ernie spent the summers at their spot at Fish Lake. Now in his retirement years Ernie had time to fish and spent many hours out on the lake in his boat with family and friends. Life was good when the water was calm and the fish were biting! After moving to town, Ernie added a shop to the garage and began woodworking in his spare time. Following a trip to Sweden, Ernie began making Swedish sleighs (sparks) which are still used by many.
Ernie’s dedication to family continued as grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived. Once again Ernie’s knowledge of animals, farming, fixing, and building were shared with the next generations. His example of caring for and enjoying time with family made an impact in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Sadly Ernie passed away at home on February 12, 2018 at the age of 88. His friendship, kindness and sense of humour will be greatly missed.
