Obituary of Ethel Barrie

Mrs. Ethel Barrie, age 96, passed away in the Shellbrook hospital on Tuesday, March 4, 2008. Ethel was born on March 18, 1911 in the Wandsworth district, and grew up on the farm doing farm work and driving horses. She also did housework for a neighboring family, working long hours. Ethel always worked on the threshing crew at harvest time. She married William Barrie from Silver Grove in 1937, and they built a new home in Brightholme. They had two children, James and Alice. Ethel was a special person with a big loving heart for her family and friends. She was never heard to say a harsh word or complain when sick. She is at peace with the Lord. Ethel leaves to cherish her memory, her children, James (Delores) Barrie of Edmonton, Alice Sokulski of Shellbrook; her grandchildren, Jim Barrie, Shelley (Jim) McCullough, Ian Barrie, Carrie Sokulski, Morris Sokulski, Jeanne (Barry) Gingell; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; a sister, Edith Schlichemeyer of Leask; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William; an infant son; two brothers, Alfred Lewis, Ernest Lewis; a sister, Florence Bannerman; her parents, Alice and Walter Lewis; two brothers-in-law, Henry Schlichemeyer, Joe Bannerman; two infant sisters; an adopted brother, David Lewis; a niece Phyllis Helm. The funeral service was held at the Shellbrook Pentecostal Church on Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 pm with Pastor Claude Tucker as officiant. The pallbearers were Ian Barrie, Craig Barrie, Morris Sokulski, Bryce Gingell, Tim McCullough, Ken Lafrencz. The organist was David Hjertaas, the soloists were David Palm, Wendy McKay. The eulogy was given by Sandi Retterath, and the reader was Sherri Sokulski. Interment was in St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery, Brightholme.
