Obituary of Gary Johnson

Gary Leo Johnson September 19, 1942 – November 10, 2018 Born September 19, 1942, Gary was raised in Sinclair, Manitoba on the family farm along with four siblings. He joined the armed forces in his teen years and served with the PPCLI in Edmonton and the Canadian Ordinance Core in Shilo, Manitoba where he took a jump course and did 61 jumps, then transferred to Cold Lake, Alberta where he did Safety Systems on the air base. In 1965, on October 16th, Gary married Erva Shier in Weldon, SK. After 12 years of service in 1972 Gary left the armed forces and moved in with his wife and two sons in Prince Albert, SK. Gary became a journeyman carpenter and finished his career working maintenance at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary, retiring in 2002. Gary loved fishing, hunting and camping. The forest was his cathedral. Many happy years were spent with family and friends at Candle Lake. The best times were spent around the campfire, on the lake fishing, and frying pickerel over an open campfire. In their retirement years, Gary and Erva enjoyed many trips to the U.S.A, Barbados, and Cuba. They traveled Canada coast to coast (including Newfoundland). After their traveling days were over they spent the winters in Victoria with family. Gary leave behind his wife, Erva, of 53 years, and his sons Barry of Edmonton, AB and Jody (Geneva) of Victoria BC, his grandsons Tyson, Teagan, and Tanner, and his granddaughters, Una and Columbia. He also leaves behind his brother Earl. Gary is predeceased by his father, mother, two brothers and a sister. A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Legion Hall 133 8 St E, Prince Albert, SK. In lieu of tributes, memorial donations in Gary’s name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society 54 11 St E, Prince Albert, SK S6V 0Z9 or the Canadian Mental Health Association 1322 Central Ave, Prince Albert, SK S6V 4W3.
