Obituary of Karin Strube

Mrs. Karin Elizabeth Strube 1922 – 2019 Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, May 25, 2019 in the Shellbrook Hospital at the age of 97. She was born in northern Sweden on March 18, 1922 to Eric Oberg and Alphild (Karlsson) Oberg. When mom was one month old, tuberculosis claimed the life of her father. In search of a better life for herself and her two young daughters, Alphild immigrated to Canada in 1924, settling in the Sturgeon River district where relatives were already established. She met Gilles Berggren there and they were married in 1926. Over the years, one sister and two brothers were added to the family. Mom often talked about playing with the neighbor children (not able to speak English), walking to school and church, picnics, social events, chores, and the challenges of living in a small log house with a family of seven. Mom completed grade nine in the Sturgeon River School and soon found employment working for neighboring farm families. The first family she worked for was the Lundeens in the Dry Creek district and it was during this time that she met Dad. They were married June 30, 1944 in the Sturgeon River Chapel, honeymooned in Waskesiu, and began their life together on the farm in Foxdale. Except for the six years they operated the Foxdale General Store, their life was dedicated to the farm until Dad passed away in 2011. Mom remained on the farm until 2013. At that time, she moved into her lovely apartment at Homestead Place in Shellbrook and a whole new life began for her. Following a period of adjustment, she renewed old and made new friendships. She learned to play Kaiser and tile rummy and enjoyed the visiting with and closeness to everyone there. She was well liked and liked everyone. Mom was an excellent cook and homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, flowers (especially petunias), playing cards, reading, curling, dancing and old-time music. She had an astounding memory and several unique sayings that will be in our memories forever. She was a quiet, gentle and kind lady and will be missed more than words can say. Cherishing her memory are her three children, Carolyn, Judy and Glenn and their families including 7 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; one sister-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews; step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and step great great grandchildren as well as many friends. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; her father Eric Oberg; her mother and step-father, Alphild and Gilles Berggren; her parents-in-law Fritz and Frederica Strube; her siblings Greta (Sigfred) Dahlberg, Majbritt (John) Rusk, Birger (Shirley) Berggren, Ingvar Berggren; 8 nieces and nephews; a great nephew and a great niece; her siblings-in-law Margaret (Jerry) Curran, Charlotte (Ernie) Stead, and Marcel (Emma) Strube. A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, May 31st at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Shellbrook. Pastor Emmanuel Aristide officiated.
