Obituary of Norma Williams

WILLIAMS - Norma Clara It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Norma passed away peacefully at the McKenzie Town Retirement Residence on Saturday, August 16, 2008 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease at the age of 81. Norma was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her two loving sons, Deryl (Bonnie) and adored granddaughter Sarah of Calgary; Dean (Jeanette) of Swift Current; brother and sister in laws Savilla (Wilfred) Hepner of Waldheim, Art (Ada) Willems of Saskatoon, Willmer (Rosella) Willems of Saskatoon, numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Ronald in 1955, loving husband Alvin in 1993, her parents Thomas and Clara Hill, brother Victor Hill (Kathleen), sisters Winnie Berg (Arthur), Lettie Schmitz (Dominic), brothers and sisters in laws Mildred (Dan) Fisher, Milt (Irene) Williams; and Lenora (Richard) Schmaltz. Born in Parkside, Saskatchewan on February 26, 1927, Norma was raised in the Shellbrook area by her elder sister Winnie and her husband Arthur Berg. Norma met Alvin Williams and they were married on November 2, 1949. They were blessed with three sons Ronald Arthur (1953-1955), Deryl Kenneth and Alvin Dean. Norma was a devoted wife and mother and proud homemaker. The family moved throughout many small towns in Saskatchewan while Alvin constructed schools, hospitals, banks, and nursing homes finally settling in Kelvington, Saskatchewan in 1962. Norma enjoyed memorable vacation trips to the Bahamas with son Dean and Disneyworld with Deryl, Bonnie and Sarah. In the fall of 2000, Norma sold her home in Kelvington and moved to Calgary to be closer to her sons and their families. She enjoyed the 6 years she spent in her retirement apartment visiting neighbours, playing cribbage, bingo, enjoying music and dancing and volunteered to distribute birthday cards to the residents of the complex. In 2003 Norma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and due to her condition was cared for by Dean and Jeanette until she was moved to McKenzie Town Retirement Residence in August 2006 where she remained until her passing. Her family took great comfort knowing that she was loved and taken care of in such a caring and secure home. A memorial service was held in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan at Knox United Church on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. conducted by Rev. Brian Maitland, followed by interment at Shellbrook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary, 201 - 222 - 58th Avenue SW, Calgary, Alberta T2H 2S3. Arrangements in care of Mountain View Funeral Home (Calgary) and Beau "Lac" Funeral Home (Shellbrook).
