Obituary of Stanley "Stan" Kowal
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Stanley “Stan” James Kowal of Samburg, SK, in Prince Albert, SK at the age of 88 years. He was born March 24, 1931 at Honeymoon, SK, the fourth of eight children born to Walter Sr. and Anne (Bukszak). Stan attended Podole school in Honeymoon until grade 8 and was very athletic. He was awarded the trophy for most athletic points two years in a row. In 1950, at the age of 19 he left the farm to work in St. Catharines, Ontario at a zipper factory for one year. He then joined the team at General Motors assembling distributors and alternators, rising to become Foreman. He played hardball with a team making many friends and winning many championships. In 1960 the farm was calling the farm boy back to Saskatchewan. Stan landed a job as Foreman for the construction of the Holy Family Hospital. He became a Councilor for the RM of Buckland.
Stan met a young lady, Evelyn Hamilton and they were married August 9, 1968. They were blessed with three daughters, Adrienne, Nancy and Jamie. Stan worked two jobs, farmed and drove pulp truck. In May 1973, Stan purchased the farm in Samburg, SW 17-50-23-W2. It was a mixed farm of grain and cattle. Stan became Reeve of the RM of Garden River, from December 1985 to September 1991. Stan was also a Councilor there as well from November 2005 to October 2014.
Stan loved the outdoors which included fishing, hunting, walking and blueberry picking, or should we say “scouting for blueberries”. Dad loved to Polka, listen to Old Time Music, play Kaiser and watch Hockey Night in Canada and Major League Baseball. Stan was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbours.
The pride and joy of his life were his eight grandchildren, Andre, Ivan, Justin, Angela, Gille, Nadine, Lisa and Adam. Taking them fishing, watching and cheering them playing their sports and taking them to Fort a la Corne to pick his favorite, blueberries.
Stan passed away peacefully with his family by his side August 13, 2019. He is survived by his three daughters and their families: Adrienne (Lionel Lavoie) and children, Andre, Justin and Nadine; Nancy (Gilbert Lavoie) and children, Ivan, Angela and Gille: Jamie (Michael Jensen) and children, Lisa and Adam. His four sisters: Ellen (Thomas Bayer), Fran (Lino Giavedoni), Josie Yachetti, Ann Liebrecht; his one brother: Steve Kowal; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and also the mother of his children, Evelyn Kowal.
