Obituary of Michael "Mike" Cymerys

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mike Cymerys on Dec. 9. 2019. Mike was born in Turza, Poland on Aug. 31, 1922. At the age of about 20 he was taken to work in Germany where he met his future wife Josephine. He continued to work there until he was able to immigrate to Canada in March 1949. While in Canada, Mike worked in Saskatchewan and Alberta on bridge construction projects. After retirement he and Josephine lived in Prince Albert and enjoyed gardening which included vegetables, flowers and apple trees. They always shared their bounty with friends and neighbours. Mike was always involved in the community with the church, Legion and Polish organizations. In 1998 Josephine suffered a stroke and so began Mike's long relationship with the Herb Bassett Home. He visited Josephine every day for the 7 years she was resident, going every morning, taking an hour to go home for his lunch, and returning in the afternoon to stay until about 7 pm. While at the Herb Bassett home he helped other residents and staff which resulted in many lasting friendships. After Josephine passed away he continued to volunteer for many years. Mike remained in his home on 11th Street East until February 2015 and then moved to the Kopera Home. Following some health issues he was placed at Shellbrook and Leask care homes before coming to reside at the Herb Bassett Home in June of 2017, which he called his home. Many sincere thanks to all the Herb Bassett Home Staff for the good care, kindness and understanding provided during Mike's stay. Also a big thanks to Dr. Surkan for the professional care provided to Mike. We appreciate the understanding, support and guidance provided by Lorne Adams of Beau “Lac” Funeral Home. Mike will always be remembered as a kind gentleman and a true friend.
