Obituary of Clayton Martin

It is with great sadness that the family of Clayton George Martin announces his passing on the 7th day of December 2008 at the age of 96. Clayton was born on May 15th, 1912 in Morse, SK. He moved to Big River in the 1920's. He ran dogsleds in races in the early years. Clayton then served in WW II in England and was injured so he returned to Canada to recover. He married Irene Sweeney in February of 1942 and together they had a daughter and a son. Clayton has done a lot of things in his 96 years; he was a commercial Ice Fisherman north of Big River and also hauled freight from Northern Saskatchewan to the headquarters in Big River. He was a farmer in the Delaronde area, drove school bus for over 20 years, and also a guard for the RCMP and worked for Jack & Helen McLean. Clayton loved woodwork especially making doll houses; he also enjoyed camping and trips with Irene to BC to visit family. They moved into Big River in 1964. Clayton loved being out in his yard and in his garden, as well as making road trips in his car around the district, just to check out the fields and the countryside. For the eight years Irene was in the nursing home, he visited her every day, rain or shine or come what may. Clayton leaves to cherish his memory: His children: Della (Keith) Berg of Edmonton, AB and Dale (Lori) Martin of Big River, SK. His grandchildren: Shana (Kevin) Beech of Lacombe, AB and their children Jessica and Taylor; Heather (Reggie) Reed of Church Point, LA; Charlene Martin of Prince Albert, SK and her children Auburn and Rylan and Trevor Martin of Prince Albert, SK. A brother Ken (Fern) Martin of Lumby, BC, a sister in-law Eva Martin of Vancouver, BC. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The Funeral Service for Clayton was held on Thursday, December 11th, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Legion Hall in Big River, SK with Rev. Brian Maitland officiating. Music of "Amazing Grace" and "Silent Night" was led by Brian and Susan Maitland. Honorary Pallbearers were "Members of the Big River Royal Canadian Legion". Memorial Donations in memory of Clayton may be made to the Big River Legion. Email condolences may be sent to www.beaulacfuneralhome.com. Edward Beaulac of Beau "Lac" Funeral Home was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
