About nine years ago, when my brother was very sick in hospital—a friend of a friend put me in touch with Ron, who visited patients in the city. He seemed just so tall and just real serious. He had came to pray with us—it was significant to me because i had no idea we were allowed to smudge in the hospital… and he gave me and my family the permission to feel all we were feeling in that prayer room. Facing our fears of what might happen. Ron connected me to ceremony in sask when i didn’t have it. He’d always say, “prepare yourself, everyday, smudge and prepare yourself,” and it’s true. Ron’s gifts of spirituality and integrity— always standing up for what he believed in and facing any fear “you can’t go around it, you have to go through it,” and calling out any BS, have greatly impacted my life since. when things seemed to be falling apart, he led me to see a way through. This world was made so much brighter by him and the hope he brought to so many—he always seemed to be helping people, everywhere he could— just so extraordinary to see someone putting himself out there for others the way he did— because he had the strength and courage to overcome so much in his own life; he saw it in others. I have so much respect for him—what he stood for and the incredible life he led. and he was pretty funny, too. The last conversation we had was about him chasing Darlene on her scooter— even though Darlene told me later he was being a chicken—she was trying to get him to catch up!
