Obituary of Robert Willemptge Kinnaird
Robert “Mike” Willemptge Kinnaird
1941 – 2020
Sadly, on August 26, 2020, Robert “Mike” Willemptge Kinnaird, late of Shellbrook, SK, passed away at the age of 79 years.
Mike was born on June 26, 1941, in Prince Albert to Alida and Robert (Bob) Kinnaird. He was raised on the family homestead farm near Shellbrook. He was the youngest of four children, sixteen years younger than his nearest sibling. Mike attended Shellbrook school, graduating in 1960. During his high school years, Mike worked at the Shellbrook Creamery and as a mechanic at a local garage. These work experiences helped him to decide to enter post-secondary education.
Mike attended Teachers’ College, graduating in 1961. He moved to Big River and started his first teaching position where he met a fellow teacher, Annette, whom he married. Over the next four years, they continued to teach along with starting a family, welcoming their daughter, Charlene. He then attended U of S working toward his Education Degree.
His career then took him to Wild Rose Central School. He and Annette taught together here for several years. During this time their family and his career continued to grow. He obtained his degree and became principal. A daughter, Michelle, and a son, Rob, were born.
Mike returned to Shellbrook teaching at W.P. Sandin High School, where he became principal for many years. Students remember him for his love of teaching Shakespeare and his “booming” voice heard throughout the school.
Mike moved his family to the farm, built a house, and got back to his farming roots. He continued to teach and farm until his retirement in 1991. After retiring, he continued farming and substitute teaching.
He was a member of the Shellbrook Elks, a fan of the Roughriders, and a volunteer in the community. Mike’s other interests included curling, which he played and coached, gardening, fishing, bowling, playing cards, golfing, and camping. His “Grandpa jokes” always brought groans from all of the family. One of his favorite places to visit was Deadwood where he was very lucky at the slots.
His last years were spent in Shellbrook receiving excellent care at PIHC House C.
Mike is lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Annette, along with their three children, Charlene (Kelly), Michelle (Dave), and Rob (Corinne), plus numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mike was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Alida, his brothers Graydon (Gena), and Jasper, his sister Marion (Lloyd), parents’ in-law Clinton and Hazel, sister-in-law Darlene.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mike to the Shellbrook and Districts Health Services Foundation – Recreation Department. Family and friends wishing to send online condolences are welcome to visit www.beaulacfuneralhome.com
