Obituary of Winifred Rose Porter
It is with sadness the family of Winifred Porter announces her passing on Feb.8, 2009. She was born April 30, 1913 to Edward and Margaret Marshall in the Spruce Glen district. Winnie always loved nature and the beauty of Spruce Glen remained with her all her life. Albert and Winifred were married in 1934, and home was Honeywood until retirement. They had a son Richard (Ann Swan) and a daughter Joanna (Peter Naylor). Joanna had two daughters, Jocelyn (James Gleason) and Sarah (Chris Guy) and their two children, Amelia and Benjamin. Winifred was predeceased by her husband Albert in Aug. 2000. Her passions in life were her pets, her books (she was an avid reader), and her summers at Emerald lake. She always said the happiest times of her life were in the times spent at Emerald Lake. Winnie was a wonderful cook, "a good English savory cook", her mother being her inspiration and her teacher. Winnie was known for her colorful personality..No one loved to argue more than she did and she was the first to say so. She had a very quick wit with sauciness and a good sense of humor. She also loved her flower garden and tended to it with gusto, always having something blooming in her house, from amaryllis at Christmas through to the tiny green aspen leaves in May, and after that, blooming beauty in her flower garden. She was a lady that never talked negatively, never talked about her health, or the weather. She would say that was too ordinary and boring. Christmas was a season Winnie loved; her house was always decorated with red candles, red ribbons and Black magic chocolates. The whole Christmas season would be planned with dinner parties and card parties, and nothing dared interfere with those plans. Bert and Winnie retired to Parkside and after Bert's death Winnie spent time in several private care homes, the most recent being Lois Rudolph's Good Will Lodge. The family would like to acknowledge the care and kindness Winnie received under the loving guidance of Lois. The last month of Winnie's life was spent in the Spiritwood Care Centre. Once again she received wonderful care, our thanks to the staff at the Spiritwood Care Home. There was no funeral at Winnie's request. A private prayer service was held with Pastor Chris Dean's leadership. Internment will take place at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to the Shellbrook and Districts Health Services Project.
