Obituary of John "Jack" Howard Hartnett

Jack was born Jan. 28, 1922 in Naisberry, SK (near Star City) to Francis and Margaret Hartnett, the 3rd of 5 children.� He passed away at his home in the Big River Health Centre on Mar. 9, 2009 at the age of 87 years.�� Jack was predeceased by his wife Stella in 2000 and his son Tom in 2005, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.� Jack is fondly remembered by his children: Ted (Michelle), Rick, Ron (Wendy), Wendy (Larry), Bill, daughter-in-law Elaine, 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.� He is also remembered by brothers Glen and Tom (Pat), sisters Irene (Mel) Shouse and Peg (Keith) Quittenbaum and sister-in-law Marge Ingram.� After completing high school, Jack served in the armed forces as a member of the 8th Reconnaissance Regiment (14th Canadian Hussars) for 5 years during WWII.� Upon returning to Canada, Jack obtained a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Saskatchewan and opened Hartnett Drugs in Saskatoon with his brother Glen.� In 1964 Jack moved his family to Big River to open the Big River Pharmacy.� Jack and Stella retired in Big River in 1987.�� Jack was very involved in many community ventures in Big River including serving as Mayor of Big River, Legion, Chamber of Commerce, Rodeo, Saddle Club, Skidoo Club, and many other organizations and committees.� A memorial service to celebrate Jack's life was held on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at the Big River Community Hall.� He was laid to rest with his beloved wife and son at the Big River Cemetery.� In lieu of flowers, in Jack's memory, donations can be made to the Big River Legion, Big River Health Centre, or SPCA.�
