Obituary of Jean Mills

With heavy hearts, the family of Jean Mills, would like to announce her passing on Monday, February 1, 2021. Jean was born on January 29, 1930, in Krydor Saskatchewan. She lost her mother in infancy, so together with her sister Rose, they began their lives with their grandmother on the family farm. Jean had many fond memories from days on the farm. Late in her teen years she moved to Prince Albert. While working at the Wings Café, Jean met her husband to be, Frank Mills and they later married in 1950. Together Jean and Frank raised two sons, Larry and Glenn. She began a retail career working at The Metropolitan Store and Marshal Corner store once the boys were in school. Jean then worked at College Grocery and later worked at Safeway. The family often took fishing trips to the Heart and Crean Lakes at Waskesiu, where many memories were made in the boys’ younger years. In 1976, Mom and Dad built their cabin at Weyakwin Lake, and the fun and memories began. They spent many springs and summers at the lake, spending time with family and friends. Fishing, picking blueberries and mushrooms, were something she looked forward to. She loved to crochet, and there are many people out there that have an afghan or a baby blanket that she made. Cross Stitch was something Jean was very skilled at, and she completed many pieces to donate for fundraisers for the Cancer Society. She loved to keep busy cooking, baking, gardening, going for walks and playing cards. For many years she participated in Aquasize classes at Marion Aquatics where she made many friends. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother “Baba Jean”. Family was very important to her. She was very proud of her sons, granddaughters and great-grandson, and all their accomplishments. Jean was a woman of great faith and was a proud member of the St. David’s Anglican church. Jean was predeceased by her husband Frank, her parents, Peter and Maria Melnychuk (nee Hayduk); her brother, Andy Melnychuk; her brothers-in-law, Gordon Mills, Ronald (Rita) Mills, Nick Kardinal; sisters-in-law, Eileen (Tom) Kykkanen and Hilma Melnychuk. Left to mourn her passing are her son, Larry (Wendy) Mills and granddaughter, Krista Mills (Brad McCaw) and great-grandson, Logan Malden; her son, Glenn (Rita) Mills and granddaughters, Julie Mills and Ashley Mills, her sister, Rose Kardynal; her brother, John (Pat) Melnychuk; and her sister-in-law, Barb Melnychuk. A Private Family Service will be held. Jean’s family is very appreciative and extends their thanks for the care she received from the staff at Victoria Hospital and from Dr. Alana Surkan. Special thanks to Beau “Lac” Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jean may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 2 - 630 45th Street West, Saskatoon, SK S7L 5W9.
