Elizabeth Billay

Obituary of Elizabeth Billay

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mom Elizabeth Billay (nee Safruk) on Monday, August 23, 2021, at the age of 85 years.

She was born on the family farm in the Samburg district and was the youngest of eleven siblings.  As a young girl, she was musically inclined and learned to play the guitar and accordion alongside her brothers and sisters.

At the age of 17, she married the love of her life, Peter Billay on November 2, 1952.

They worked tirelessly grain farming, milking cows, selling cream, growing a large garden, canning and tending to numerous livestock. There are many memories of her operating the tractor baling and driving the grain truck. They found time to go dancing, socializing and enjoyed ice fishing.  She also enjoyed making ceramics for a period of time.

She took pride in gardening, cooking and baking.  Mom loved making her traditional borscht, cabbage rolls and perogies. We often arrived home to the aroma of freshly baked bread, cinnamon rolls, donuts, and many other delights. Mom could be found picking berries, wild mushrooms and creating amazing dishes. Numerous times we would get together for perogie work bees.  She also belonged to the St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League for many years.

Mom is survived by her four children:

Darlene (Tom) Wormworth and daughters Adrianna (Kevin) and Karly

Brian (Debbie) and their children Katelyn and Myles

Audrey (Pat) Leach and their children Nigel (Steph), Bailey (Jared) and Ian (Cheyanne)

Rodney (Jolene) and their children Amber, Kyle (Bailey) and Donoven

Mom will be missed. We are comforted knowing that she and Dad have joined hands after all these years.  Thank you to all who cared for our mom.
