Noreen Braaten

Obituary of Noreen Patricia Braaten

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Noreen “Nonie” Braaten, at the age of 79 years. Noreen passed away Monday September 6th, at Mont St. Joseph’s Home.

Noreen was born on March 20, 1942 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to parents Valentine and Nora Zwack. In 1961, she married Allan Braaten and, over the next 25 years together, they raised two daughters, Cindy and Dana.

Allan’s untimely death in 1987 left Mom a widow at the age of 46. After working many years in Dr. George Janzen’s Dentistry practice, she made the decision to return to school and earn her certification as a Dental Assistant. The years that followed continuing to work for Dr. George and then later Dr. Jerry Janzen, led to many lifelong friendships with colleagues and patients, as well as opportunities to complete medical missionary work in the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Guatemala with George and his wife, Mary.

After retiring, Mom spent much of her time volunteering with her younger sister Donna, crafting, reading, and playing cards, but nothing made her happier than the time she spent with her family - especially her grandchildren and then later, her great-grand children. Noreen often showed her love through hand knit mittens, homemade cabbage rolls, and fresh-baked banana bread iced with butter.

Noreen is survived by her daughters Cindy (Wes) Gee and Dana (Barry) Epp; her grandchildren Megan (Graham) Beddome, Matthew Gee (Matt Palsich), Kate Epp (Adam Locke and daughters Brynn and Eva), and Jake Epp; great grandchildren Olivia and Jack Beddome; a much beloved sister Donna (Charles) Hegedus; a brother-in-law Gordon (Donna) Braaten; a sister-in-law Terry Zwack; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mom was predeceased by her husband of 25 years, Allan Braaten; her parents, Valentine and Nora Zwack; her in-laws, Albert and Agnes Braaten; and her brother, Dennis Zwack.

Noreen will be remembered for her sharp wit, kind heart, and resilient spirit. Although the last few years were difficult for her, she will continue to be remembered by her loved ones as a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Mom believed in God and greatly enjoyed Sunday Mass and special celebrations at MSJ with Father DJ and Deacon Eldon.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Mont St Joseph for the care and compassion shown to our mom.  A special thanks to Shannon Martens, for her support and coordination of all of Mom’s medical care and needs throughout her stay at MSJ.

Out of respect for Mom’s wishes, a small private graveside gathering for immediate family will be held to celebrate her life.

In lieu of other tributes, please consider a donation in moms name to the Mont St. Josephs Foundation - 777 28 St E, Prince Albert, SK S6V 8C2, or to any charity of the donor’s choice.
