Obituary of Evelyn Edwards
Evelyn May Edwards (Ormiston) was born June 9, 1926 and passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on November 4, 2009 at the Evergreen Health Centre in Leoville, SK. Evelyn May, the third in a string of eight children, of Albert and Minnie Ormiston, was born in the Ormiston District near Fort Qu'Appelle. She attended the Ormiston School through grade 10, and after that she rode horseback to Fort Qu'Appelle to complete grade 11 & 12. May then moved to Fort Qu'Appelle and went to work at the Pioneer Store and then later at Dunk's Drug Store. She played ball, sang in the church choir, and volunteered for the Red Cross. At work she met and sold a pair of rubber boots to a young soldier who was returning to the family farm after serving overseas in World War ll. That young man, Richard (Dick) Edwards, courted her, won her heart, and married her on May 21, 1947. Dick and May farmed and raised their daughter, Margret, in the Invercauld District, south of Fort Qu'Appelle. Both Dick and May were very community minded and May helped start the Busy Homemakers Guild. They both enjoyed dancing, playing ball, curling, and playing cards with their friends. They were also very dedicated to the Royal Canadian Legion and May belonged to both the Legion Auxiliary and the Legion. They retired into Fort Qu'Appelle in 1984 where they continued to curl and took up bowling. May enjoyed gardening, needle work, cooking and baking. She remained very active with the St. Andrews United Church Women, the Legion Auxiliary and the Legion as well as numerous other community activities. Dick and May enjoyed travelling and they took pleasure in socializing with their friends, especially at the Legion Lounge or during coffee at the Squire. They gave up curling and playing ball but never gave up watching the Blue Jays or curling on TV. However, their greatest treasures were always their family. December of 2007, when their health was failing, they moved to Spiritwood to be with their daughter and son in law. May lost the love of her life when, after 61 years of marriage, Dick passed away in July 2008. However, she remained devoted to her family and her eyes always lit up when she was with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was much loved, will be sadly missed, and will remain forever in our hearts. A service to celebrate May's life will be held from St. Andrew's United Church, Fort Qu'Appelle, SK on Monday, November 23, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Sharron Bodnaryk will be officiating. Interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery. May leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Margret (George) Pretli of Spiritwood, SK; her grandchildren Dwayne (Marie) Pretli of Auckland, New Zealand; Darren (Simone) Pretli of Kingstown, St. Vincent, West Indies; Crystal (Marty) Lehouillier of Leoville, SK; and Shelley Pretli of Spiritwood, SK; her great grandchildren Delaney and Caley Lehouillier; her sisters June Edwards, Fort Qu'Appelle, SK ; Joyce Jordan, Whitewood, SK; and her brother Wilbert Ormiston, Fort Qu'Appelle, SK; her sister-in- laws Francine Ormiston of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK; Vi Ormiston of Regina, SK; and Jane Ormiston of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK; her brother- in-laws Bert (Eleanor) Edwards of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK and Jim (Joyce) Edwards of Assiniboia, SK; numerous nephews and nieces.
