Obituary of Alida "Ida" Groenen
Alida Johannes Groenen 1933 - 2010 Alida (Ida) Johanna Peeters was born on March 25, 1933 in Utrecht in the Netherlands. She grew up in Utrecht, became a hair dresser and met John Groenen on February 14th, 1951. They fell in love and were married on May 29th, 1954. On June 3rd, 1954 they immigrated to Canada to start their new life... Burt and Ralph Fellows working with the Immigration Office, had requested a Dutch mechanic, preferable married and this was the start of John and Ida's new life together in Shellbrook. After they built the house on 3rd Avenue, Ida started her hair dressing business in their home. Ida was a real homemaker; in the sense that she raised her family, sewed and knitted clothes for the entire family, kept a meticulously clean home all while she ran her hair salon. At the same time as she was busy in her home, she also was a member of the Royal Purple, and CWL. John and Ida raised their three children, Robert, Harry and Yvonne in Shellbrook. Ida had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She spent many hours playing with them, thoroughly appreciating them and this provided her great pleasure. Ida's hobbies included knitting, crocheting, craft making and shopping. Her generosity was enjoyed by everyone in the family. Ida passed away in the Shellbrook Hospital on January 10, 2010 after battling health problems for the past year. Her smiles and her witty sense of humour will be missed by all her family and those that knew her. Mom, we will miss you. Ida will be survived by: her loving husband John Groenen; her children Robert (Kathy) Groenen and their children John & Marshall Groenen; Harry (Susan) Groenen and their children Christopher, Billy (Becky), Luke Groenen; Yvonne Groenen and her children Blayne (Teri) Smith, Brittney (Jamie) Capner, Tammi Smith; her great grandchildren Noah Schmalz, Haegan Schmalz, Ciera Smith, Cole Smith; and her sister Reidt (Otto) Ringes. Ida was predeceased by: her parents Alida & Johannes Peeters; her sister & brother in-law Doris (Wim) Sudmeier and an infant sister. The Memorial Service for Ida took place on January 13, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. from the St.Agatha's Catholic Church in Shellbrook, Rev.Fr. Tony Pangan was officiant. Harry Groenen read a eulogy, Pat Sonntag performed a solo, Christi Martin along with the Catholic Church Choir led the hymns. Luke Groenen was the urn bearer, Tammi Smith was the cross bearer, and Larry Brossart was the reader . Honorary pallbearers were all of Ida's grand children. The interment will take place at a later date, memorial Donations may be made in Ida's memory to the Shellbrook & Districts Health Services Project.
