Obituary of MarieAnna Cecile Prefontaine

MarieAnna Prefontaine (nee Duret) passed away peacefully on April 11, 2023 at Mont St. Joseph Home in Prince Albert, SK, at the age of 95.  She was born on April 16, 1927 in Victoire, SK to Willie and Amanda Duret, the oldest in a family of 10.  Marie-Anna attended a one room school in Berube until grade 8, afterward staying at home to help out on the family farm with gardening, housekeeping, learning life skills, as well as helping with outside chores.  She met Leo Prefontaine and they married on June 30, 1948, part of a double wedding.  They then settled on their own farm in Ormeaux SK, where together they worked and lived off the land and shared the farm chores such as milking cows, feeding pigs and chickens and tending to a large garden.  They built the house that they lived in and raised their 7 children.  MarieAnna was an avid sewer, knitter and crocheter, she fabricated and knitted most of the clothes for her family as well as baked bread, pies, and cakes.  She loved to socialize and often hosted many extended family gatherings with aunts, uncles, and cousins.  She was also very involved at the church in Victoire.  After 25 years on the farm, they moved to Prince Albert with the three children remaining at home.  In Prince Albert she joined the senior’s group at St. Michael Parish where she remained an active member.  She loved to play cards and joined a couple of card playing groups as well as playing with family and friends any chance she got.  Marie-Anna and Leo were married for 51 years sharing any time they could with family, visiting, travelling, and camping.  Family was most important to her, and she leaves to mourn her passing, her children, Raymond Prefontaine, Helene (Lloyd) Fisher, Denis (Hazel) Prefontaine, Gilles (Sherry) Prefontaine, Diane (Mervin) Fjeld, Irene (Guy) Gobeil, Luc (Katherine) Prefontaine and their families.  She was predeceased by her husband, Leo; her son Victor; her parents, Willie and Amanda Duret; her parents in-law, Louis and Léa Prefontaine; immediate family members, Julien Gobeil, Lynn Prefontaine and Wyett Meyers; as well as 5 brothers and 10 brother and sisters in-law.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, April 17, 2023, at St. Michael Parish, 1505 –13th Street West, Prince Albert, SK.  Interment will follow in the Garden of the Old Rugged Cross, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens, Prince Albert, SK.  In lieu of other tributes, donations in memory of MarieAnna may be made to Debden Heritage Manor, Box 608, Debden, SK S0J 0S0.
