Obituary of Jean Kachur

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Kachur on January 9, 2024, at Rose Garden Hospice in Prince Albert, SK.  She was the beloved mother of Val Weitzel and son-in-law, Howard Weitzel.  She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Joel Weitzel (Darcie Aug), Carla Weitzel (Scott Wolbaum) and Rissa Weitzel (Gray Myrfeild) and her great granddaughter, Reegan Hodder.

Jean was born and raised on the family farm near Krydor, SK, along with her 4 brothers and sisters.  It was there that she met and fell in love with William (Bill) Kachur.  They married in 1949 and he was the love of her life for the almost 62 years they had together.  They had 2 daughters, Valerie, and Emily.  They were wonderful parents and loved their daughters very much.  Mom enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, embroidering, canning fruits and pickles, making meals for family or friends and the best was spending time with her 3 grandchildren.  She loved all of her family and was delighted when they visited.  They often entertained their friends and had many lively card games around the kitchen table.  Jean was conscientious about staying in touch and wrote thousands of cards and letters over the years to  all those she cared about.

Jean was a woman of deep faith and was active in her parish and the WCWLC.  She continued to attend weekly mass for as long as she was able.  Mom worked for many years at River Heights Lodge, where she also made several friends.  She was a member of the Horticultural Club and couldn’t resist bringing home many plants and flowers.  She also supported the charitable work of the Knights of Columbus through Bill’s involvement.  She lived a full and happy life, making lasting friendships everywhere she lived.  They were in small rural communities where Bill taught, in Reward, SK for 8 years, then in North Battleford for over 50 years, and lastly in Prince Albert, SK for the past 3 years.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, Bill; daughter, Emily; parents, Peter and Ksenia Lasiuk; her brothers, sisters, nieces , nephews, and family pets.

In lieu of other tributes, donations in Jean’s name may be made to All Saints Ukrainian Catholic Church, 922 108 St, North Battleford, SK S9A 2A8.
