Ione Surbey

Obituary of Ione Grace Surbey

In Loving Memory of Ione Grace Surbey (Craig)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Ione Surbey on January 18th, 2024, after a valiant 4-year battle with cancer.

Ione was born in Gowganda, Ontario in 1932 and as a young girl her family moved to her grandfather’s farm near MacDowall, Saskatchewan.  She later moved to Saskatoon for High School where she met and married Philip Surbey.  Together they built a beautiful life and were blessed with three children: Carol, Linda, and Greg.

Ione and Phil's journey led them back to MacDowall, where they spent their retirement years doing the things they loved most - gardening, spending time with family and grandkids, raising horses, and creating lasting memories at their cabin at Christopher Lake.  Phil passed away suddenly in 2000 and Ione stayed on the farm keeping busy in her garden and enjoying all the beauty that farm life offered.

In the last decade of her life Ione found companionship with Merv Houghton who stood by her side with unwavering devotion.  Ione's legacy lives on in the values she instilled in her family.  She will be remembered for her unwavering strength, resilience, and dignity as she faced life's challenges.

Ione is lovingly remembered by her children, Linda Welden (Marty), Greg Surbey (Shelley); her cherished grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and Mervyn Houghton.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Surbey; daughter, Carol Surbey; parents, Harlan, and Iris Craig; siblings, Jean, Margy, and Jerry.

The family expresses their gratitude to the exceptional staff at the Rose Garden Hospice for their compassionate care during Ione's final days.  A celebration of Ione's life will be held in the spring.  Those wishing to make a memorial donation in lieu of other tributes may do so to Rose Garden Hospice.  P.O.
