Obituary of Charles Thompson
THOMPSON- Mr. Charles Thompson passed away peacefully with his family at his side at Mont St. Joseph Care Home on May 27, 2010. Charlie was born on March 23, 1935 in Canwood, Saskatchewan to Thomas and Martha (nee: Aasen) Thompson. Charlie was the second oldest of five children who were raised on a farm in the Ordale district. He received his education at Ordale, Bygland and Moonbeam schools where he learned to speak English, as Nowegian was his first language. As a young man he worked as a farm labourer, logger, and for Alberta Power until he became a carpenter, later receiving his Journeyman's in the carpentry trade, for which he was well known. On May 20, 1961 he married Lorna Goldhawk. That same year they moved to Prince Albert where they started their family. In 1972 they moved to an acreage in Holbein where they remained until 2009. Charlie was a proud Norwegian and was happy to see the traditions and language of his culture being passed onto his family, with the exception of lutefiske. In his younger years Charlie enjoyed traveling to BC and the USA as well as attending rodeos with his family. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, visiting, and helping others. He would often be found out in the field at harvest with Eddie and Paul, or on coffee row, or having lunch with Clem or Don. Charlie had a good sense of humour and loved to spend time with his grandchildren who he cherished. In September of 2009 Charlie moved to the Evergreen Health Centre in Leoville where he made yet another close friend, Lorne. In March 2010 Charlie moved to Mont St. Joseph Care Home in Prince Albert where he remained until his passing. Charlie leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Lorna; his family, Dale (Cyndi) Thompson of Radisson, Elaine (Craig) Cournoyer of Prince Albert, Charlene (Murray) Willoughby of Cameo, Samantha (Glenn) Zdrill of Meath Park, Tanner (Amanda) Sprague of Lloydminster; his sisters, Eunice (Al) Strobel of Medicine Hat, Dorothy (Garry) Andrews of Candle Lake; his brother, Norris (Betty) Thompson of Oliver BC; his sister-in-law Irene Thompson of Calgary; numerous grandchildren, relatives, and friends. Charlie was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Martha Thompson and a brother Arnold Thompson. The funeral service was held on May 31, 2010 at the Shellbrook Pentecostal Church with Pastor Claude Tucker as officiant. The eulogist was Samantha Zdrill, the urn bearer was Dale Thompson, and the organist was David Hjertaas. The honorary pallbearers were Eddie Strelau, Paul Sommerfeldt, Harry Bazley, Clem Delisle, Herb Goldhawk, and Doug Nikolaisen. Interment was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery on June 1. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Saskatchewan, or to the Autism Foundation.
