Tom was born in the Timberland District near Leoville and attended the small school in that area. He got his Interprovincial Heavy Duty Mechanic ticket, worked for Leo's Sales & Service in Manitoba, and then Waterous Detroit Diesel-Allison in Calgary until his retirement.

Tom had a love of sports, especially curling and baseball (playing and coaching both girl's and boy's teams). He also loved camping and fishing, especially with special friends Darlene & Ern and Ken & Hazel.
