John was born in the Kilwinning area on February 19, 1937 to Jackson and Dorothy (nee: Hustwick) Phillip. John was the youngest of three children who were raised on a farm in the Kilwinning district. He received his education at the Spruce Glen School, Kilwinning area. He began farming with his father at the age of fifteen. Later he farmed in his own purchasing land and cattle. In 1995 they moved from the farm and purchased their home in Shellbrook. John did custom cattle hauling for a few years. Then for approx. seven years he hauled mail for Canada Post.
