Obituary of Dale Brian Unger
Dale Brian Unger passed away peacefully on May 25, 2024, at Rose Garden Hospice in Prince Albert, SK, at the age of 71. Dale was born October 28, 1952, in Gladstone, MB, to Albert and Freida Unger. After graduating high school in McCreary, MB, Dale moved to Flin Flon, MB, to work at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. It is there that he met his wife, Debbie. They moved to Prince Albert, SK, where Dale was hired at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in October of 1974. Dale and Debbie were married in September of 1975. They continued to build their life and family in Prince Albert, welcoming their daughter, Beige, in March of 1981.
Dale worked at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary for 39 years. During much of his career, he worked as a guard. Early in Dale’s career it became apparent that he had many skills and talents. One of which was his ability to shoot. He became a Weapons Trainer working with other guards to certify them for service. Dale won awards for his abilities at CSC competitions from 1988-1990. Dale always had a keen interest and skill in computers and financials. He was a whiz with numbers. After obtaining a diploma in Data Processing from University of Regina in 1990, he went on to complete accounting classes at SIAST in Prince Albert. This led him to make a move from guard to a position working with scheduling at the Penitentiary. He did this until his retirement in February of 2014.
Beyond his professional accomplishments Dale was a family man who loved his wife and daughter above all else. He was a beloved husband to Debbie and a devoted father to Beige. Dale touched many lives as a bonus dad and grandpa to the special people both big and little; he welcomed all into his family with love. His easy-going personality, patience, sense of humour, and generosity made him a cherished and loyal friend to many.
Dale Unger is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Debbie; daughter, Beige Unger; mother, Freida Unger; sisters, Bonnie (Len) Zdan and Penny (Mike) Unger; sister-in-law, Shirlene Millions; as well as many other family members and friends that have become family. Dale is predeceased by his father, Albert Unger; mother-in-law, Eleanor Fagrie; and grannie, Emma O’Leary.
