Obituary of Ruth Annie Nordstrom

NORDSTROM - Ruth Annie

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Ruth Nordstrom. Ruth passed away peacefully at Whispering Pines Place on Thursday June 27, 2024, at the age of 96 years.

Ruth was born on August 14, 1927, in Blue Heron to George and Zenia Skafte. Nurse Lidstrom delivered Ruth in their log house. She was raised on the farm. She took her primary schooling at Blue Heron School and her grade 10 and 11 high school in Canwood.

Ruth met Eldon after he returned from the Navy in 1944. It was love at first sight and they were married on November 18, 1949. They farmed in the Marchant Grove area for fifteen years. In 1964 they moved to Canwood and bought ¼ section of land from Walter Petrune. In 1967, Ruth and Eldon were blessed with their only child, Deon.

Ruth worked for 4 years as a clerk at the Margolis store in Canwood. Once she married Eldon, she watered and fed many farm animals and was an excellent housewife.

She belonged to the Canwood Homemakers Club. Ruth was a member of Whispering Pines Place Nursing Home Auxiliary for 28 years. She was a member of the ELW Ladies Aid. She belonged to the Canwood Community Choir. She was a regular attender of coffee row. In her early years, she played ball and curled with the ladies’ teams.

Ruth was a dedicated wife and mother. She worked hard and led a simple life. Her Danish culture was important to her and as a result, she loved baking traditional Danish meals. She made the best buns, bread, gravy, and Deon’s favorite homemade french fries.

Ruth continued to live on the farm after Eldon’s passing until 2016. As a result, she was in the hospital for two months after suffering a stroke. Ruth became a permanent resident at Whispering Pines Place. Mom loved Whispering Pines Place and the staff loved mom.

Ruth will be lovingly remembered by her son Deon (Lynn Hanson) of Canwood, SK. Ruth is predeceased by her husband Eldon (1988), her parents George and Zenia Skafte (1987,1986), her sister Agnes and Walter Person (2019, 2008), her mother and father-in-law Elna and Alfred Nordstrom and numerous sister and brothers-in-law.

The family wishes to express our gratitude to all staff at Whispering Pines Place for their excellent care and support over the years.

The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday July 2, 2024, at 1:00pm at the Zion Lutheran Church in Canwood. Rev. Emmanuel Aristide will officiate, burial followed after the service at the Canwood North Cemetery. Lunch was held at the Seniors Room in the Elks Community Hall.
