Obituary of Kenneth Oscar Lens

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Kenneth Oscar Lens announce his passing on Monday, July 19, 2010 at Whispering Pine Place Care Home in Canwood at the age of 75 years. Ken was born on June 22, 1935 to Oscar and Olga Lens in Deer Ridge and the second child of six who were raised on the farm. He took his schooling at the National Park School and then started work on a sawmill, then on the road construction for many years. On Nov. 18, 1961 he married a long time neighbour Millie MacDonald. They lived on a farm that was homesteaded by his grandfather Martin Lens till 1966 and then bought a farm from Siguard Sands in Deer Ridge where he continued to farm and in the winter months worked construction. Darrel was born in July of 1962, Debbie in Feb. of 1964 and Darcy in 1972. In the spring of 1974 Ken took a job with the Dept. of Tourism and Renewable Resources where he worked until his retirement 23 years later. Ken was hit hard in March of 1966 when his wife Millie passed away from cancer after 34 � years of marriage. He moved to Fish Lake area with Violet Miller who later also passed away so then Ken moved into Shellbrook. He battled cancer for many years and being stubborn as he was he beat the odds for almost 4 years. Then he fell and broke his hip and that seemed to take away some of his spirit. Ken leaves to mourn: His children , Darrel (Sherri) Lens, Debbie (Randy) St. Germain, Darcy Lens,his grandchildren; Courtney, Abbie, Jennifer and her son Ryley, Trevor, Rene, His sisters; Sonja Herdin, Lyla (Merv) Laycock, Louise (Brian) Martin, His brother, Dale (Maureen) Lens, His brothers-in-law, Adlard Blair, Rod (Mary) Macdonald, Doug Macdonald,his sister-in-law, Joyce Macdonald as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by: his dear wife Mildred (nee: Macdonald), His sister, Doreen Blair, his parents, Olga and Ascar Lens, His mother-in-law, Ruth Macdonald, His brothers-in-law, Edwin Herdin and Reg Macdonald, A sister-in-law, Arlene Macdonald. The Funeral Service was held on July 23, 2010 in the Deer Ridge Recreation Center at 2 p.m. with Pastor Doug Schmirler as officiant. The Eulogists were Louise Martin, Lyla Laycock, Lorraine Bilodeau. The Honorary Pallbearers were, "All of Ken's friends". The Organist was Grace Buhler. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. The Interment was in the Deer Ridge Cemetery.
