Obituary of Clara Olive Larson

Clara Larson

July 20, 1929 – Sept. 6, 2024

Clara Larson passed away peacefully in Whispering Pine Place Nursing Home in Canwood, SK September 6, 2024, at the age of 95 years.

Clara was born on July 20, 1929, in Shellbrook, SK. She is the youngest daughter of Watson and Jemima Jewitt. Her parents moved to the Shellbrook District from Ontario in 1912 and farmed four and a half miles south of Shellbrook.

Clara attended the Hazel Ridge School. She worked for several years at the bakery and the Chronicle office in Shellbrook. Clara married Lloyd Larson on November 19, 1949. The first winter they were married they moved to Victoria BC for work; she always expressed a love of that city and although she frequently expressed a desire to retire there, she never returned.  They returned to Shellbrook where Lloyd worked at Fellows Brother’s Garage before moving to the farm in the Ordale District in 1951 where they farmed until they retired and moved to Shellbrook in 1999. Clara and Lloyd had one son Barry, born on October 14, 1956. In 2019 Clara moved to Whispering Pine Place where she resided till her passing.

Clara was an excellent seamstress and a great cook who made the best lefse, flatbread and gingersnaps, not to mention homemade bread with flour from her own flour mill from wheat grown on the farm. Clara loved to play crib, most often winding up on the winning side of the board. She loved word searches and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. Clara curled and played softball competitively in her youth and in later years loved to watch the Brier and Scotties on TV.  She always had a great garden and knew all the best places to pick berries including Saskatoons, Blueberries and Pin Cherries – her Pin Cherry jelly was superb!  She was a woman of many talents including being an excellent shot with a 22 with no gopher threatening her garden was safe and several turkeys (well paper targets anyway) falling victim to her skills at the annual Fish and Game Turkey Shoot.  Along with Lloyd, she was a longtime member of the Shellbrook Fish and Game.

She is survived by her son, Barry and his wife Joanne of Calgary and her sister-in-law Winnie Larson of Kindersley; Her cousin Earl (Ruth) Jewitt; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Lloyd Larson; her parents Watson and Jemima Jewitt; her siblings Ernest Jewitt, Mary (Duncan) Belfry, William (Grace) Jewitt, Florence (Duncan) Belfry, Charles (Alice) Jewitt, Gordon (Edna) Jewitt, Issac (Selma) Jewitt, Luella (Roy) Anderson, Laura (Frank) Parr, Ena (Paul, Wes) Couronne-Culshaw; Her in-laws Lars T. (Tone) Larson, Torbjorn “Ted” (Winnie) Larson, Knute (Gladys) Larson, Bertha (Osmund) Sindland, Julia (Ralph) Fellows, Anna (Woodrow) Whaling, Alma (George) Senum, Thelma (Oke) Bloom, Selma (Issac) Jewitt. Clara was predeceased by several nieces and nephews.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Whispering Pine Place staff for taking such excellent care of Clara.  Thanks, are also extended to her nieces Sharon Buckingham, Marlene Fellows, and Barb Bloom for the care during her last days on this earth.  Clara was a plainspoken woman, freely giving advice or a piece of her mind as the situation warranted.  She loved reading short anecdotal stories or a good joke which she frequently saved to pass on to others.  Clara had a wonderful sense of humor, a quick wit and will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her and was fortunate enough to share in her life’s journey.

In accordance with her wishes no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake Country Wildlife Federation (Box 1056 Shellbrook, SK S0J 2E0) which Lloyd and Clara were instrumental in starting.

Family and friends wishing to send online condolences are welcome to visit www.beaulacfuneralhome.com  Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Beau “Lac” Funeral Home and Crematorium, Tammy Smart, Funeral Director, Shellbrook, SK 306-747-2828.
