Obituary of Curtis Hammond

It is with great sadness that the family of William Alfred 'Curtis' Hammond announces his sudden and unexpected passing on September 20, 2024, in Prince Albert, SK. Curtis had been mourning the recent loss of his beautiful wife MaryAnn. Curtis' final wish was granted. He was able to pass in his sleep in his beloved forever home.

Curtis was born on June 8, 1944. He was the eldest son of Norman and Edith Hammond of the Red Deer Hill district. He had two younger brothers Jack and Neal. At age ten, he had his first job at the general store in Red Deer Hill. After completing grade eight he took the bus to Prince Albert Composite school. At age 16, he proceeded to work for the Esso bulk dealer in PA.

He met his future wife MaryAnn Heffernan of Birch Hills in 1964. They married the following year in St. Louis. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.  Newly married, the couple lived in Big River where Curtis operated the Esso service station. From there, they moved to Biggar where he was employed as a grain buyer for National Grain Company and later as a brakeman for CN Rail. After the CNR office down-sized in Biggar, he and his little family moved to Prince Albert where he worked as a penitentiary guard and later for the Pulp Mill.

Under the direction of Bill Richards, Curtis learned to perform farm and urban sewer and water installations. Six weeks later, he purchased the business from Mr. Richards. In 1982, the ever-expanding family moved to its current location: an acreage southwest of Prince Albert. Curtis loved working on vehicles and farm machinery. Curtis was a tremendously talented mechanic. He could fix anything. He was happy to share his expertise assisting anyone in need of help. He restored nine Farmall A tractors one for each of his children and one for MaryAnn and himself.

During their retirement years Curtis enjoyed travelling with MaryAnn. They loved visiting their many children and grandchildren, as well as hosting their many friends and relatives on their acreage. His maintenance of the property was a work of love; where he grew many fruit and berry trees as well as extensive gardens of vegetables.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, MaryAnn on August 14, 2024, just 37 days before his own passing. He was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Edith Hammond; and his great grandson Ace Hammond. He will be lovingly remembered by his 8 children: Gordon (Bernadette), Kathleen (Trent) Sumners, Curtis James, Christine, Amanda (Matthew) Rogoschewsky, Michael (Kassie), Adam & Daniel; his 14 grandchildren: Matthew, Melissa, Norman, Kale, Reese, Aydan, Lukas, Alexis, Mason, Hudson, Felix, Wyatt, Lauren & Max; his 4 great grandchildren Grayson, Marley, Alice & Archie; his siblings: Jack and Neal Hammond; and many nephews, nieces and friends.

A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., on Friday, September 27, 2024. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 28, 2024. Both services will be held at St. Joseph's Parish, 260 25 St E, Prince Albert, SK. Luncheon and fellowship to follow. All are welcome to join the family for the interment at Winton Park Cemetery, Birch Hills, SK.
