Obituary of Nancy Elizabeth Wells
With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beautiful mother, Nancy Elizabeth Wells (Gay) nee Brenton. Nancy was born on July 1, 1931, in Fort Saskatchewan, AB and passed away on December 14, 2024, in Spruce Home, SK. She left this world on her own terms from the comfort of her bed in the house that she loved. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Holly Wells; and her son, John Wells. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim in 2019.
Our mother was the “Hostess with the Mostest” and was often the life of the party. Her favorite expression was “Its wine o’clock somewhere”. Mom joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1951 and worked as a wireless operator. She planned on moving up the ranks, but fate led her to meet a handsome Air Force Pilot (our dad, Jim), whom she married in 1953. Military regulations at the time allowed only one spouse to serve so mom reluctantly resigned. Her last assignment while stationed at Sea Island (Richmond, BC) was presenting actress Marilyn Monroe with a bouquet of flowers as she stepped off the plane while filming a movie in Canada. Mom cherished those photos forever. Mom loved being a military wife and the next 15 years took them to Winnipeg MB, Summerside PEI, Saskatoon SK, Comox BC and finally West Germany after which our father took early retirement.
The ”nomadic gene” was deeply embedded as they moved from Victoria, to Surrey, to Vernon, then Saskatoon, back to Vernon and finally to Spruce Home where they put down roots for the next 30 years. Many of their friends told them their moves were in the wrong direction! I think mom was a prairie girl at heart. Mom worked for many years as a secretary/stenographer and then went back to school to become a medical transcriptionist and office manager where she worked part time until age 90.
Nancy will be missed by her children and the many friends she and Dad made while being active locally in a variety of seniors activities
A Celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at a later date.
