Obituary of Allyn Wood

It is with deep and profound sadness that the family of Allyn Wesley Wood announces his passing on November 28th, 2010 at the Lakewood Lodge in Big River, SK. Allyn will be sorely missed by his wife Margaret and his children Gail Gear of Ladder Valley, Grant (Janice) Wood of Big River, Garnet (Tammy) Wood of Saskatoon, his 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Allyn also leaves in his passing his brother Edgar (Doreen) Wood of Prince Albert, his sister Leone White of Victoria, sisters-in-law Donna Wood of Sooke, BC, Ebba Eggleston of Saskatoon, Marie Eggleston of Manitou Beach and a brother-in-law Bill Brumwell of Saskatoon. Allyn was predeceased by his parents Robert and Mary Wood in 1981, a younger brother Russell in 2002, a son-in-law Roy Gear in 2005, brothers-in-law Maxwell Eggleston in 1981 and Walter Becker in 2001 and a sister-in-law Jean Becker in 2008. Allyn was born May 29, 1928, in Dodsland, Saskatchewan. In search of a better life the Wood family moved to the Ladder Valley district in May of 1933. Despite being young Allyn, together with his mother and younger brother, tended the farm while his older brother and father joined the Canadian forces during the Second World War. Allyn married Margaret Eggleston, the school teacher at Ladder Valley, on August 5th, 1947. Together they lived in the Ladder Valley area all of their lives, settling on the original homestead in 1965. Allyn remained there until he was forced to move to the Lakewood Lodge in July of 2009. A jack-of-all-trades, he was well known around the country for combining, sawing and planing lumber and crawler tractor work. His greatest joy was to build or fix equipment, something that was engrained in him at an early age and something that never left him until his passing. A celebration of Allyn's life took place on December 2nd in the Big River Community Center. A private internment followed at the Big River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations can be made to the Lakewood Lodge Auxiliary or the Ladder Valley Community Center.
