Obituary of Margaret Thelma Wood
The family of Margaret Thelma Wood sadly announces her passing on September 2, 2012. Margaret was born in Saskatoon to John and Florence Egglestone, on January 8th, 1927. The second oldest of four children, Margaret spent her childhood years on the farm at Colonsay, Saskatchewan. Growing up through the Depression had a profound influence on her, something that remained with her throughout her life. Margaret loved school, playing sports and time spent with her brother, sisters and cousins on the farm. She was a competitor until the day she died. Late in August, 1944, after graduation, Margaret attended Saskatoon Normal School. After six weeks of instruction, and at the tender age of 17, Margaret and her sister Jean boarded a train and headed north to Big River. She started her teaching assignment at the single room schoolhouse in Ladder Valley in October of 1944. Shortly thereafter she met Allyn Wood. After a two year courtship the couple were married on August 5th, 1947. Margaret spent 10 years teaching in Ladder Valley, after which she completed her career in Big River, retiring in 1986. In retirement Margaret and Allyn spent many wonderful years together on the farm in Ladder Valley. Margaret will be sadly missed by her children, Gail Gear of Big River, Grant (Janice) Wood of Big River and Garnet (Tammy) Wood of Saskatoon, her sister Marie Eggleston of Manitou Beach, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ebba Egglestone and Bill Brumwell of Saskatoon, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her one brother, Maxwell, in 1981, her father John in 1983, mother Florence in 1988, brother-in-law Walter Becker in 2001, a son-in-law Roy Gear in 2005, sister Jean Becker in 2008 and her husband Allyn in 2010. The family would like to acknowledge the high level of care received at the Lakewood Lodge in Big River during her final years. The funeral took place on Wednesday, September 5th, at 2:30 pm at the Big River Community Center. Internment took place at the Big River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to either the Lakewood Lodge Auxillary, the Ladder Valley Community Center or the Big River First United Church. Email condolences will be forwarded to the family. Ed Beaulac entrusted with arrangments.
