Obituary of George Thompson

Thompson, George - It is with great sorrow that friends of George Thompson announce his passing after a long illness at the age of 56. George was born to Harry and Doris (nee Clarkson) Thompson on July 29, 1949 in Prince Albert, SK. George started and attended school in Silent Call and then transferred to the Debden School. He graduated from grade 12 in 1967. After high school, George took over his parents farm until 1996. George started work for Don Paquette at the Highway #55 garage in 1996 and continued to work there until August of 2005, when he became ill. George volunteered his services in many areas such as Canwood Park Board for approximately 17 years, Canwood Golf Club for 10 to 12 years and Chairman of the Bingo functions in Debden for 24 years. He played an active part for the last 32 years in the building of the curling rink and also as chairperson. George ended up with a large extended family. He was always willing to help where he was needed; he was a likable person and enjoyed being with people young and old. George will be deeply missed by all who knew him. George is remembered and sadly missed by numerous cousins and their children on both sides of the family, as well as many dear friends and his Godmother Ruth Mayoh. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Jean Baptiste RC Church in Debden. Doris Wideen-Bazley was the officiant and the cross bearer was Scott Turner. Calvin Smith read the eulogy. The soloists were Lorna Parent, Gilles Francoeur and Emile Tetreault. The Canwood Community Choir accompanied by organist Grace Buhler sang a congregational hymn, In the Garden, as well as two other choir songs. The urn bearer was Trudy Smith and Honorary Pallbearers were Larry & Marlene Chalifour, George Dore, Gladys Silzer, Marcel & Lorraine Dore, Ronnie & Gladys Mayoh, Clarence & Richard Smith, Denis Jean, Evette Bailey, Sandra Hobbs, Corrine Smith, Margaret Reves, Fern Meyers and Ruth Mayoh. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Debden Doctor's Clinic. George was laid to rest in the Canwood North Cemetery. Beau "Lac" Funeral Home was entrusted with funeral arrangements.
