Obituary of Stanley Nelson

With sadness the family announce the sudden passing of Stanley Nelson on February 19, 2013 at the age of 85 years. Stanley Nelson was born October 16, 1927 to Nels and Ruby Nelson. He was the oldest of a family of 6 boys and 2 girls. Stan lived on the farm in the Robinhood area with his mom and brother Frank until moving to Medstead in 1990 after a battle with cancer. Stan was happy to have running water and all the other conveniences of moving into the seniors housing unit in Medstead. He was able to get around town and visit with people, which was very important to Stan as he was a very social person. Stan was known to make a daily visit to most of the businesses in Medstead. His very distinctive laugh will be missed by everyone. For many years Stan took the 333 bingo numbers to the store and marked them on the paper to share with everyone, this will be greatly missed by many. In 1989 Stan won a car in the Western Lottery which was very exciting for him. The car allowed him to get around and do things that he enjoyed. Stan started bowling when the bowling alley opened in Glaslyn. He enjoyed his bowling and this social outing was very important to him. He bowled with 4 ladies from Glaslyn and their team was named “Thorn and Roses”. Stan was well known for his long walks very, very early in the morning. He would wear his bright fluorescent vest and would walk 6 to 8 miles. Stan enjoyed and was proud of his garden and house plants. He liked to compete with the Housing Manager over this and would show her how good his plants were growing. Stan was always there to support all the suppers that were held in Medstead and surrounding area and was usually the first one there. The church was very important to Stan and he rarely missed a service. He served on church council for Bethel Lutheran Church in Medstead, and he was always there to open the door every Sunday, turn up the heat, shovel the snow and greet the Pastor on arrival. The members of Bethel Lutheran are really going miss having Stan to do this. Stan’s presence around town will be missed by many.
