Obituary of John Horn

John was born in Herczegfalvai, Hungary on December 14, 1924. At the age of 8, John immigrated to Canada in February 1933 with his Mom and brothers Frank & Charles to join his Dad (who had immigrated in 1928) at the homestead in the Norbury District approx. 10 miles SE of Spiritwood –NW9-49-10 W3. John left home in 1943 & worked for Frank Botzang at Mildred, then at Don MacDonald's in Bapaume where he met Bertha Dyck. John & Bertha married on April 2, 1945 in Spiritwood. After various moves to Wild Bear and back to Bapaume, in 1950 they settled on NW19-50-9 W3 in Mildred, buying the land in 1952. He purchased more land in 1956 & 1959 for a total of 5 quarters of land. They had a mixed farm with grain, cattle, pigs, chickens & turkeys. All family members took part in the farming activities; milking cows, picking rocks & roots, seeding & harvesting. John supported their 4 boys involvement in sports, community activities and Mildred 4-H. They all attended Camp Tapawingo at Candle Lake. John was involved with the Mildred school board, hall & rink board, United Church & Sask. Wheat Pool. John, Bertha & Doug moved to Spiritwood in 1981, a first stage of retirement. There, John continued to be involved with the Co-op board & United Church. He was still very involved in the community and sold many tickets for various fund raising projects. John & Bertha spent many hours at the tourist booth, enjoying the interactions with visitors. John called Bingo at the Pioneer Centre & nursing home. He was a regular at the curling rink & bowling alley and was honoured to throw the first bowling ball at the grand opening. John & Bertha travelled to England, Europe, US and took numerous bus trips. They attended their grandchildren’s graduations, weddings and various sporting events. John enjoyed playing cards and passed this on to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. John & Bertha enjoyed attending various picnics/sport days and events in the surrounding area such as Carleton Trail Jamboree, Shell Lake Hey Days, Timberland Rodeo, Curling Tankard in North Battleford and many others. He will be remembered for riding his blue bike around town, for playing horseshoes and whistling. He grew potatoes & vegetables for the local farmer’s market, which gave him the opportunity to visit with lots of people. In 2010, John & Bertha’s yard and house became too much for them so they took up residence in Rose Gill Lodge, Rabbit Lake, eventually moving into the nursing home in Spiritwood where he spent his last year.
