Obituary of Shirley Thompson

With sadness, and cherished memories the family announce the passing of Shirley Thompson at the age of 81, on May 28th, 2013. Shirley was born on October 29, 1931 at Bredenbury, SK but at an early age moved to the area of Plenty, SK. This is where she grew up. She has four brothers with her being the oldest and the only girl. Shirley received her nursing degree at the City Hospital in Saskatoon. She moved north to Spiritwood where she was employed at the hospital. On August 15, 1957 she married Gordon Thompson. On December 14, 1959 their son, Terry was born. In 1968, Ted was adopted into the family. As time moved on Shirley quit nursing and ran the local Sears office for many years. She became a good friend to the girls that worked there over the years. She always made trips to the SGI office to keep Gordon and Terry organized. Shirley was very involved in her community. She was a member of the Lioness Club, helped organize Prairie Community Endeavors, canvassed for the Community Birthday Calendar plus many more volunteer positions over the years. Shirley loved to curl, in the early years with the Ladies Club, and then later with the regulars and seniors curling. She didn’t miss too many of the Ladies Bonspiels, they were a yearly event unmatched by anything else in Spiritwood, living right next door to the curling rink, her home was a great place to dress up for the many costumes that were worn over the years, and the many stories that can be told about the parties that continued at her house when the rink closed for the night. Shirley also loved to golf, spending time at the cabin at Chitek Lake. During winter, she loved weekly bridge games with the girls and once in a while they would let a man play. Shirley also had some special friends she loved to sit and have tea with. When Shirley’s two grandchildren were born, she really learned how to spoil children and she was really good at it. Shirley always had time for her family, no matter what she was doing. Grandparents are put on this earth to love their grandchildren. Our grandma certainly did that. We love you grandma and we will miss you. Shirley leaves to cherish her memories: her husband of 56 years, Gordon, her sons: Terry (Susan) & Ted, her grandchildren: Craig & Devyn. Also left with her memories are her brothers: Keith (Joy) Aldridge, Bryan (Joan) Aldridge, DeVere Aldridge, Rae (Eleanor) Aldridge, her sister-in-law, Trudy (Larry) Pope and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. The Funeral Service was held for Shirley on Monday, June 3rd, 2013 from the Spiritwood Civic Center. For those wishing to make Memorial Donations in honor of Shirley, the family has chosen her church; Partners in Faith as the choice of Charity. Email condolences will be forwarded to the family. Lori Saam & Brenda Beaulac entrusted by the family with arrangements.
