Please accept my deepest condolences on the death of Deborah on behalf of the University of Saskatchewan. She held an Honorary Degree from the University -- the highest honour we can bestow on anyone. This was our way of acknowledging her very meaningful work on the TRC, and as Canadian ambassador, among many other achievements. I knew her as a warm and engaging spirit and am very proud that she was an alumna of our colleges of Engineering and Law. My heart goes out to her family and many friends.

I would like to add a few more words about Deborah for her family and friends. The Canadian Ambassadors Alumni Associaton, ( AmbCanada) was very honoured that Deborah agreed last year to have our scholarship for indigenous students in public policy at Carleton University named after her. With the support of colleagues in PAFSO, we have raised most of the amount needed to make it permanent scholarship and the Canadian Mission to the United Nations in Geneva has agreed to give priority to the winner of this scholarship for their annual internships at the mission. It is very fitting that there will be a more permanent legacy for Deborah connected to causes that were close to her heart.
On a personal note, Deborah and I were colleagues and we intersected many times in our careers - notably in the Human Rights and Human Security Bureau in the mid 2000s, when she was our resident expert on the UN Human Rights system and she made the rest of look much smarter than we were. I recall well how excited she was to go to Harvard Kennedy School as Fulbright Scholar. I last saw her in our backyard in Vancouver shortly after she retired when she came to town for a gathering of her classmates from her engineering program at the University of Saskatchewan. She had a great talent for friendship and will be missed by many people around the world.

Dear Deborah’s family, your hearts must be broken with the pain of her passing. However, we hope that the memories she leaves behind will comfort you. Deborah was one of the first friends I made in 1987 when we were both students in Trois Rivières at the Universite du Quebec. We were both very keen to learn French and pursue a career in international diplomacy. We found each other again when we were both accepted for the Foreign Service a few years later and then the fun began. We stayed in touch and most recently before her posting to Guatemala, struck a supper club in Ottawa. Trying all the new places on our list and then rating them among our little club. We also snuck in a no-book book club, where you just had to read an article to participate. No pressure, the point was to get together. “Deb”, as we knew her in university, had to retrain us to call her Deborah, a name she preferred once she began her career. I saw her transition from mystery illness to diagnosis, and watched her bravely face her challenges. She was in inspiration for living life to the fullest, and taking time to travel and enjoy friendships along the way. I feel honored and blessed to have had her in my life as a friend. God bless you, all. Carol Ann Weichel, Washington DC

Deborah and I were classmates back in law school. Over the years we lost touch but last year she reached out to me after learning we had similar health challenges. I will forever be grateful for our renewed friendship, her willingness to talk to me about anything, and her beautiful, kind and generous spirit. And so many accomplishments, though I very rarely heard her speak of them as such. She did, however, speak of all of her experiences with such enthusiasm!! A truly remarkable, inspirational woman and a life well lived. Such a huge loss. My sincere condolences to her many, many friends and her beautiful family. Hoping you find peace and comfort in the company of each other and the knowledge that she touched so many lives in oh so many ways.

I want to express my condolences to the family and friends of Deborah Chatsis. I had the pleasure of working with her at Canada’s Mission to the United Nations in New York. She was a person of integrity, well esteemed by her colleagues. Our paths crossed next when I visited Viet Nam in retirement. She was so generous, inviting my friend Sharon and I to share Christmas with her and Verla. When she returned to Canada between postings, we spent a couple of years as apartment neighbours – going to the movies on the spur of the moment and sharing a laugh on our balconies in summer. A life is a continuous thread. It weaves itself through love and memory and remains a part of everyone it has touched. Deborah was part of the tapestry of so many lives. May her memory be a blessing.
